Border Crossing
For border crossing, can you use the passport alone or will you need the book also?

I was told by the passport office, that the passport card was for only land or water travel and the passport book covered all three, water, land, and air travel. I hope this helps.

Well the blue passport is the book...so you must be asking about the passport card?
U can use either...but if you go way up there and you needed to fly home for a medical emergency of any kind...u must hv the blue passport book...I carry both just incase...or if I lost the card while up in CA

Both?
Yup... the card only covers water and land,... the book covers all modes. Just renewed mine and had that explained to me.
Why anyone would carry both is beyond me. If customs wants to take your book passport they can - guess how worthless your card just became?Last edited by GAlanFink; 08.16.2012 at 09.54 AM. Reason:: addendum

I'll just get the card since I have to go buy my updated license with my hazmat, doubles/triples, and tanker endorsements, and TWIC card, and my the passport card. After I got that explained, I'll only have use for land or water.

Get either the book or both, not just the card. I speak from experience. Last year I elected to only get the card. Went on vacation to the Dominican Republic at the end of July this year. Long story short, I sent my card off to get a book at the end of May and didn't get it until about 3 or 4 days before we left after getting my congressman's office involved.
If you're already going through the process, get the book too. You never know when you might decide to go somewhere that requires it. I think its good for 10 years, so it ends up costing about $12.50 a year for both.Last edited by david123abc; 08.18.2012 at 10.08 PM. Reason:: correction
