If you ever get the oopportunity to drive a load up to Alaska then there are things you need to know. This thread is for drivers who have taken a load up and can share their advice for travelling the Alaskan Highway (AKA the Alcan).
ROUTING
The route I have travelled (so you can see this on your map) went from Seattle, WA to Prince George, BC up to Ft. Nelson, BC then Watson Lake, YT to Tok, AK then to Fairbanks, AK.
If you travel the route I take then you should be aware that Hwy 29 in BC between Chetwynd and Ft St John should probably be avoided when loaded heavy or in bad weather. It has some long 10% grades that are narrow and twisty.
FUELING
BC - Fuel at Husky Travel Centre as they will take TCH, EFS, COMDATA but they do this manually and have to phone it in. There are some flying J stops in Canada, you will find a flying j/shell station in Prince George but the Husky there is better. Last Husky you will see is in Ft. Nelson BC and its just a fuel stop.
Yukon Territory - You will need Canadian cash or a visa card even at a Petro Pass station. Use Canadian cash or you will be charged a 10% fee.
Alaska - You can use comdata, efs, tch PAPER checks at Border City Lodge Just 4 miles past the border or at the Tesoro Truck Stop in Fairbanks off the corner of Cushman st and Van Horn.
IFTA
Since Alaska and the Yukon are NOT part of IFTA you will need some money to purchase permits.
Yukon Territory
It is $60.00 for a one way load permit and then 71.38 for a round trip fuel permit. If you buy fuel in the Yukon then you will be reimbursed 7.2 cents a litre if you use the reimbursement sheet they will provide. These will be bought at the weigh station and you will need to show your registration and proof of insurance. Pay in Canadian cash or visa, MC. American cash will get you charged unnecessary fees.
Alaska
You can buy 30 day temp registrations for your truck and trailer at the Tok, AK weigh station but they will cost you more than a 1 year plate for the truck and a permanent for the trailer. Cost of the 1 year for the truck is 331.00 and the permanent for the trailer is 20.00. The 1 year and permanent can only be bought at the Tok, AK DMV and it is only open M-F with different hrs in winter vs summer.
Cell phone service
I use T-Mobile and lost service at Ft. St John and dont regain service until Tok, AK. I have heard Verizon works better up here but its only in the towns so loss of service for extened lengths is to be expected.
Things to pack
Make sure to pack warm clothes and yes I would carry chains and lots of spare food and water.
There are several things I have forgotten to add but will let others with this experience add to this thread.

Did you go up the Coquihalla Highway or did you go up Frazier Canyon? Frazier Canyon does have some ugly turns and steep grades to deal with. Also you can take the Yellowhead Hwy out of Prince George through Smithers B.C, Hazelton and then up the Cassiar, but the last time I went that way(2009) there were still plenty of stretches of dirt and gravel along the Cassiar Hwy. Also watch out for the local wild life. I had my own personal experience with hitting them. I seen anything from moose, bears and buffalo standing in the road.
I heard Trac phone does work in places, but have never owned one and will probably only work around the major cities as well. It is defintively gods country, but when broken down can quickly turn into a nightmare. Been there done that and luckily had enough tools and bits of pieces to get my ride going again since I was stranded 3 hours North of Whitehorse YT.Mommas_money_maker and make money Thank this. -
Take plenty of food and drinks. The last rest are with indoor plumbing was just north of Dawson Creeck on the Alcan highway. In the spring time during the thaw watch out for the frost heaves between Haines Junction and Beaver Creek. The ones that are real bad are the ones that don't look bad at all. Expect at least one forward facing window to have a crack or chip in it by the time you get done. If you go up the Alcan watch out for wildlife on the road once you get into the Rockies. I didn't see any wildlife on the way up there this year but on the way back I had to stop 6 times for wildlife in the road. The ones they really warn you about are the buffalo. The don't move to fast at all. If a town is on the map they might have a fuel station. None of them are designed specifically for trucks, but you can get your trucks into some of them. The one Gas station (don't remember the name of it) on the left after the Weigh Station at Watson Lake going north has a pump with a long enough hose to reach the passenger side of the truck plus it does have a large nozzle on it. Don't expect to buy anything in Haines Junction after 7 pm on a weekday as most everything shuts down by then. Take a camera with a large enough memory card as you will fill it up.

MMM why don't you take hwy 16 to 37? it looks like it's shorter around 70 miles, that's what my MicStreet&Trips shows. Maybe some summer I'll go there.

No doubt!
I was gonna post that road to the worst mountains thread.
Went up that road loaded in the dark... came back down it empty the next day.
That was enough for me.
If I'm up that way again, I'll just go on in to Dawson Creek and head north from there.
