A while back I got a roadside Level 3 in San Simone, AZ. The DOT pulled me over for a short mudflap. As he was checking my logs, he noticed I had hour left on my 70. (I was going to recap at midnight). I told him I was just going to pick up at the chili plant there in San Simone and go park right away at the 4k truckstop. He said "Ok, just make sure you do that. You're good to go."
That truckstop seems to be a popular place for the AZ DOT to shut drivers down. I've witnessed two trucks being escorted in and parked.
Another time at the Flying J in Albuquerque, we all watched as a truck was escorted into the truckstop by a Bernalillo Co. Sheriff's Deputy and a NM DOT officer. The driver parked the truck and the DOT blocked the front of the truck and the Sheriff blocked the rear. The driver got out and was standing by his truck. He was near me so I got out to ask what happened. The Sheriff pulled him over due to the license plate on his trailer being gone. The DOT officer stopped to assist because it was a truck. He asked to see his logbook which wasn't up to date, so they escorted him to the J to be shut down.

Has not one person thought that maybe he was running against his 70 hr clock and that all that on-duty Line 4 time was eating away at it. If that's the case, he has no time to move anywhere.
That's the FIRST thing I would've told the officer that if he wants to do an inspection, let me get to a place where I can be parked for my reset because the Line 4 time will prevent me from legally moving. And if the cop insists on doing an inspection there, then make sure he's well aware that the truck's staying parked there for ten hours after because I can't legally move it. And if the cop still wants to do the inspection and STILL wants you to move, get his superior on the line.
Even the cop doesn't have the OK to make you violate HOS. He pulled you over into a safe place to perform the inspection, that's a perfectly safe place to take your reset.

Here's a scenario and figure out the legality: Cop pulls you over for an inspection, puts your vehicle OOS (let's say a brake problem), but tells you you can't wait there for the repair, you have to drive down the road.
I've never been inspected in Texas. My friend has been pulled over for a random out-on-the-road inspections in Texas and both times, the cop pulled him over, explained he was going to do an inspection, and then followed him to either a rest area or a parking area down the road to conduct the inspection. And, if he was shut down (he never was) he's have a safe place to park, rather than on a road side or off-ramp. -
Actually the cop is doing you a favor letting you get to a place where there is a bathroom and something to eat. Can ya'll show some love for the Texas DPS
You made it 1,000+miles on those bad brakes you can make it to a safe place down the road. If you are 1 min over you are shut down. If you are 24 hours over you are shut down. There's more to this story, and we are truckers. You know how we don't like to tell the whole story so somebody can feel sorry for us.Last edited: Oct 7, 2012

Some of those trucks look pretty much at the end of their life but they always seem to pass. I've seen a guy driving a beat up ex-Walmart International cabover get inspected at least three times. -
