Me and my wife have been together married for 18 years. We were presented with an offer to drive a family owned peterbuilt with 132in sleeper OTR. Wife's dad is dispatcher and owns company but cant drive his truck anymore due to health. Would enjoy seeing the open road and pay is percentage of load. any suggestions??

    mje Thanks this.

Really? This has doom and gloom written all over it.

"would enjoy seeing the open road"

Dragging a trailer OTR is not a paid vacation so that you can meander around the country..

I for see problems with the in laws, you not making any money, a repossessed truck and a divorce in the future.

I vote no, but we need more info. What will you be hauling? 48 States or regional? How long do you intend to run before home time? These things matter...

Well.. Then your real question is.. What percentage do you deem fair?

When I was dump trucking (best driving job I ever had) I made 20% of 90% of what the load paid..meaning, the owner got 10% upfront. I also received full medical and dental at no expense to me.

So your pay is going to depend on what type of loads your dispatcher/owner takes..along with how much he "tells" you the load pays..(always ask when dispatched)

I still see divorce or "awkward" thanksgiving dinners

    Good luck

I'm not trying to discourage you.. I hate percentage loads! When pulling a hopper for percentage, I always asked how much it paid per ton.

Inevitably, pay day would roll around and the pay per ton was less than I was told..I'd call them up and "oh yeah, I forgot I told you it paid that". WTF?! How much did it really pay?

I always got my money based on how much I was told it paid..

    But I never trusted them..

I'm not asking so I can beat you up or make fun of you. I just want you to have a realistic picture of your new adventure.

First, if you're a true team operation, do this: Lock both of you in the bedroom, or preferably a large walk-in closet. Stay there for a week, only coming out long enough to fuel, shower and grab a bite (say about an hour.) One of you stare out the window or door while the other one sleeps. Rotate every eight to ten hours. Tie an out of balance washing machine to the bed and run it 24 hours per day.

After a couple/three days, go outside, find someone who can't speak english and give him or her money to "unload" you. Wait for a few hours. Go back to the bedroom/closet and repeat.

After two cycles of this, take two days off so you can catch up on laundry and get some actual sleep. Forget going out and visiting friends, you'll be too tired most of the time.

Not trying to rain on your parade. It just is what it is.

    I vote .... YES!

At least you'll get some good experience. Stick with it 6 months, then if you're not making enough money you will have the experience to move on to another company. Many companies would love to hire a husband wife team with some experience.
