    Hello,

I have idea to start my own trucking business. I would like to ask you for opinion :D
    Ok here is my situation:

My wife have a nice job 185k year. Our home is paid-off in full. (so no mortgage no rent).
That means we can save up to 5k-6k per month and I don't need income from trucking (at least not right away). I want to say I am not in rush to make some $$.

I am full time available at the moment without any obligation :D
We have some cash about maybe 500k available to invest in trucking business.
I don't have CDL nor I ever was in truck before :). I only have car driver license for about 15 years. My credit score is 800+.

Since we are in quite good finance situation I was thinking should my first step be to actually drive truck for a while?

I am ready to buy brand new truck or two. (200k each with trailer). But trucking business is not just buying truck so I wanted to ask you guys here for opinion.
I would prefer "new" trucks since I would like to avoid service issues and also I am in California.

    Thanks!

I've seen it said over and over: Don't jump in feet first. Test the waters. If you are thinking about doing this then go get your cdl and drive for a company first. There is too much to learn just as a driver right off the bat not counting throwing in all the stuff involved with being an O/O. I know others will have more info but I know my bf plans to put in at least 5 yrs before trying to get his own truck.

Find a partner with experience, or try to purchase a small trucking co.

If your over 45 just drive for a local school bus company if you want. Ull make about 20k a year. I'm doing this when I quit trucking.

    Thank You all for replays.

I am 35 ;). And in our situation 20k won't make huge difference.

I looked into this but none of those are for sale in my area and I really can't move because my wife job.

O.K. so why, knowing how effed up the industry is, would you want to subject yourself to that #### on purpose?

Your also in california of all places?!!!

    Are you a self abusive?

There are random drug tests so whatever your smoking isn't going to fly.

You have the assets available to get into a business with far less BS.

Alright. I'm editing the post 'cause I came out firing.

I apologize for being harsh but the reality is, yes. You need to drive a truck for a while for some starter company.

If you can put up with the crap and whatnot and you like driving a big-##### vehicle you'll be fine.

california hates trucks, not just a little bit either, they despise them.

Trust me I'm in the same boat. Wife makes the good money and I do a local gig that isn't amazing pay but it's something and keeps me busy. Take time off whenever I want too. I just use this job as my own fart around and toy money for myself.

Yes you should definitely get your cdl and drive for a while. You will be able to manage a company better if you know what its like to be a driver . It will also help relationships with employee drivers. Driving trucks is not like other jobs. I personally could not work for someone who didnt know the industry. Im sure most drivers would like to know the boss has been there.

Well I would like to have my on business :)
I have advantage to be able to work for 0$ profit in next 10yrs. That is why I can afford such adventure.
Also since California has tough regulations I am thinking about buying new trucks.

Thanks. I will definitely go for CDL.
How much time driving you would recommend in such case?
