Was driving NB I75 between Piqua and Sidney Ohio, come up behind a truck that had gaters flipping out from the back, so it was obvious the guy had a blown tire, i switched lanes to the left, and as i got closer it was the inner rear right axle tire that was shredded. So I pulled up next to the can and hollered at the driver of the truck (How bout ya so and so). I didnt even get to tell him he had a blown tire as he already knew, he then proceeds to tell me that hes heading up the road to get it fixed and that its no big deal.

Now I realize its a trailer tire, and it might not hurt the truck to pull it like that, is that a ticketable offense to continue driving like that? I believe the closest place to get the tire changed was another 15 miles up the road at Anna at L&O Truckstop at exit 99.

Yes. That can get you a ticket.. its dangerous too.

I blew a trailer tire once and before I could get to the side of the road the rubber had tore my mudflap and metal hanger off, wrapped around the axle, and tore the brake chamber up. Threw big chucks down the highway. Saw cars and trucks dodging the debris. Atleast the car riding my bumper wasnt hurt.

But I see people driving to get them fixed all the time. No one wants to pay the mobile repair bill. Ive had breakdown almost beg me to drive a flat for repair. Im not driving 15-20 miles on a blow out throwing rubber. Its my fine if I get caught. I aint paying it so best I just dont get thst ticket

yes, you can get a ticket for that. And It's really not all that safe if you got stuff flying out the back, I once blew a tire and a piece went through this ladies windshield, luckily she was unhurt.

You can proceed to the nearest repair facility if you can safely do so. Throwing rubber chunks everywhere that can damage vehicles and injure people is not safely doing so. I bet he didn't even get out and look at it.

I see a lot of containers doing this. Saw one in Ga. two weeks ago that had a brake locked up. He just continued on until both tires blew out an nearly caught on fire. It amazes me how much a guy will risk to save a few bucks.Ive picked up nails and just went easy to a tire shop, but it wasnt kicking rubber all over.

I guess it would depend on where you are? The proper thing would be to pull off and call road service. Sometimes the proper thing to do is not the practical thing to do. You pull off on the shoulder and someone hits you and someone is killed, you and your company is probably going to get sued and you might even have to defend yourself against vehicular manslaughter charges. Sometimes its more practical to just slow down and cut your 4 ways on and ride on til you can find a safe place to pull off. Of course, you DO need to stop as soon as you can safely do so to make sure that you can go on to a shop safely without killing anyone(i.e. check mudflap hangar, amount of tread left on the tire that could be slung through a windshield, damage to brake lines and chambers, etc). I have singled out a tire on the side of the interstate if it was an outside tire(always carry a couple of crowbars and a block of wood with me for that purpose). With recaps, you also need to consider your weight and how far youre going to have to go to get to a truckstop. That other tire gets hot, its going to blow as well. Usually if a recap blows, there wont be any rubber left to sling after a half a mile or so.

You just sometimes have to use your judgement on what the best thing is to do based on circumstances around you.As for getting a ticket for driving on a flat, id rather get a ticket for that than go to jail because someone ran into the back of my truck and got killed.

I dont think he did as it had just happened several minutes prior to me catching him, and I was only doing a few mph faster then he was.

The part that really threw me off was his attitude when I went to call him on the CB, it was like "#### you for calling me out in public, mind your own #### business" somewhat off putting

If he stop to look at it is just a waste of time since his mind was already set to drive it to the nearest shop simple save money over public safety and get charged with manslaughter over saving money.

first off, what does a statement about recaps have to do with anything??

and secondly , not all blowouts are slinging rubber everywhere, there are times when after the initial blowout , theres nothing but sidewall left.

the big danger was in years past when tires had tubes , the tube would flop , get hot and catch fire.

with a little caution and depending on circumstance , its not the totally unsafe thing many of you are making it out to be.

it takes a little common sense, which seems to be lacking today.

I have actually seen mega carriers on the off ramp to a t/a call road service, that's a far stupider mover than limping along to the next tire facility.
