So I've been with my current company less than a year, and I like it for the most part, but I've been offered a similar job that pays the same and gets me home every night. I want to leave with dignity and give a 2 week notice, but I'm afraid they will just bring me straight in to the terminal without letting me empty out my truck first and I'll have to find a way to box up and ship everything home. Is this a common practice? I asked a family member who works for one of the big carriers and she didn't have any insight. In fact her exact words were, "I don't know what to tell you. I've never heard of a driver giving a 2 week notice before lol"

How do you suppose I go about telling these people that I want to switch jobs? What is the right way to do this without screwing myself or this company?

Your family member is right, not many actually give companies a 2 weeks notice.Thats not going to look better in your favor on your record either.Companies could care less if you give them a 2 weeks notice. In fact you might be on their #### list. But on the other hand, your company may pay for your bus ticket home if you did give them a notice.Thats how k&b transportation is.They also routed a driver home to clean his trk out.He went back to texas where he lives and worked for his uncle in the oil fields.I quit 2 companies without a notice. They got me home for hometime, but little did they know my plan to clean trk out then take it back to the terminal.

The correct way, is to deficate all over the interior of the truck, for starters. Spread it, as much as is humanely possible. You will find fiber substitutes will aid you in your fecal notice of resignation. Grind it into the fabric covering the walls & sealing. Make sure it looks like the turd castle.
Before going into the terminal to announce your resignation, smear feces all over yourself.
Spit in your DM's eye, tell him you've seen a bigger set of balls on a mouse. At this point, he will be confused. Now is the time to strike! Surprise crap slap, to the face!

All kidding aside, a two weeks notice over your qualcomm, with a phone call to back it up. Make sure they know it's nothing personal. A good DM will be more concerned with why you're leaving rather than trying to get revenge. Very unlikely you'll be routed back to your main terminal immediately unless you're a complete screw up. Even then, still unlikely.

Be polite and courteous. Leave the same way you got in, is a good rule of thumb. When you wanted the job, you were meek and receptive, just because you're leaving doesn't mean you need to walk out shouting "Well #### this place, and everyone in it!" At the end of the day, any satisfaction you'd glean from telling these people what you really think would not be worth throwing away a good reference.

    Be smart. Be safe.

I look at it like this, if they are a decent company and you think you may go back to work for them, them run earn your 2 weeks off for home time then request hometime, clean your truck out, then give 2 week notice next thing you know you will be at a terminal and can turn your truck in with a bus pass waiting for you.

if you don't plan on going back, go home, clean truck out, tell them you have an issue with the truck and you need a terminal, get to terminal tell em you quit, have new company bus you from there or get your own way home and the. Bus yourself out to new job.

i paid off my truck from Werner and already had a new place to put my truck and as soon as I got bill of sale I told them to pull their crap out I'm done and gone. (You really think I am going to go back there?) but to each his own

Do you have a company policy manual. Most jobs I have had required a 2 week notice. They tied getting paid out any additional benefits to it. Don't give the notice don't get paid. 2 weeks is expected.

Do companies give a notice when they fire drivers or when they close their company, not always. If the company has been good to me then more then likely ill give them some kind of a notice and request to be routed home to clean my trk out.I did with k&b transportation. But I was also a local driver too.If the company isn't far from my home and I liked the company then yes they would get a notice because ill always be going to their terminal. But clear on the other side of the map,not likely they would get a 2 weeks notice.Really companies could care less if you give them a notice. They know the drill with drivers.

That really depends on who you work for, and how you get along with your office. If you're on good terms, a week or two notice isn't out of line, but be prepared for it to impact your paychecks, as they're not going to work too hard to keep you running if you're leaving anyway.

If you're on bad terms, they might just route you thousands of miles in the wrong direction, just to be rude. It's hard to call. My breakdown is, good terms = two weeks, unhappy terms = one week, BAD terms(screwing with pay), I clean truck, park at terminal, go home, and when they call with my next assignment, tell them I won't be back and here's my address to mail a W2 come tax time<click>.

Last company I gave 2 weeks notice 12 days later I cleaned out my truck. They didn't exactly miss me and I sure don't miss them.

Is that because you followed my steps regarding working with smearing feces around the cab?

    Called it.

It's 700 miles from where I picked up the truck to where I live. I could start my new job on Monday if I was home, so the issue isn't about making money - they'll put me to work very quickly, it's more about getting home to clean out my truck. I'll admit, I jammed more crap in this truck than I care to take home on a bus or a plane. I guess my real question is, when drivers quit a job with or without notice, do they send you straight to the terminal without passing Go, or are they civil enough to get you home for part of a day to get my stuff out?
