Does anyone know if there are any criteria for a DOT reportable accident? I ask because I had a backing incident in January and I keep getting asked if it was DOT reportable. Frankly, I don't know. I expected that it is DOT reportable if it shows up on your MVR. Are there any guidelines to inject into this situation?

My understanding has always been that a DOT reportable accident is one in which a injury occurs and/or a vehicle has to be towed away. For example, in my 3 1/2 years driving, I have 3 accidents on my record, only one of which was DOT reportable. In this accident, a car hit me in the side at an intersection after not stopping for a red light. The car was totaled, and I needed a tire and mudflap replaced on my truck. In my other two accidents, property damage occurred, but nobody was injured nor any vehicles towed from the scene; hence, these were not DOT reportable.Criminey Jade Thanks this. -

I did happen on private property. Police were called, so that's why I wasn't sure. No injuries occured, thankfully.

Ya you should be good I'd call them to double check they can tell you right over the phone if you can ever get a hold of anybody you might even ask an officer or call the local dot where it happened and talk to them. I'm sure they can tell you.

Dot accident has to do with the injuries and the amount of damage to vehicles/parties involved nothing to do with private property or not .

if it was the local police and no tickets were issued very doubtful it will show up on your DMV. they will file a internal report so it is on file.
that has been my experience.

A DOT reportable accident happens on a public roadway most times. There are exceptions, though. There is a member who's truck was backed into at a truckstop by a USA Truck. The driver was drunk. Even though it was private property, because the driver was DUI, it was DOT reportable.

To make a long story short., anytime there is an injury, fatality, or tow away from the scene of the accident. It is DOT reportable regardless of who is at fault
