I don't drive very far from my home state, but from what I can see and hear, going thru some Scale Houses can be a driver's nightmare. Specifically, that new scale house in northern Oklahoma on SB I-35 is pretty intimidating. It is brand new and huge. They have a big barn in the back where a Tractor Trailer can drive thru to get thoroughly worked over, er uh, I mean inspected. A Driver was telling me this Scale will "hold you" on that scale for 20 or 30 seconds at time, even if there is a dozen trucks in line. Pretty intimidating type behavior.
Also, hearing bad things about the Kansas scales on I-35 TurnPike and plain ol' I 35, too. Was running with a driver who refused to cross a Kansas scale, so we took the scenic route. I am not familiar with Kansas, but he was.
Anyone else have these opinions or otherwise , that Scale Houses now are acting like a driver is some sort of criminal?
If so, how will these incidents affect driver's a CSA score, and ultimately take more drivers off the road?
Are Scale Houses getting tougher to deal with?

Some scale houses are better or worse than others. Most won't bother you much unless they spot something wrong on the truck or you are overweight or for some other reason. Texas is another state that has gotten more aggressive at a couple of their scales.

Been thru alot and not a big deal. Only called into one because truck was new and no plate still had temp registration. He looked at papers said everything fine and free to go. That was I49 outside KC, mo

I was greeted by Arkansas DOT standing right next to the scale looking at everyone's log books while another officer walked the trucks/trailers last week. Officer told me to get a leaking brake chamber fixed and have a safe trip. I don't have problems.
CA did a level 1 on me about a month and a half ago. Took a whole 7 minutes. -
Sounds like Hope Scale. I should hope I would get so lucky with an air leak.

Scale houses are a breeze. Keep a clean dash, a relatively clean truck and don't look like death warmed over you, and you'll be fine. But even after that, they do randomly select trucks & drivers to inspect. Just don't give them a reason to pull you in. And you'll find, no matter where you are in the country, most of the people in the scale house are decent people, no big deal. Even California. Was given a level one on the Cottonwood scale, he noticed I was low on drive time and invited me to sleep there.
Cranky Yankee and TomOfTx Thank this. -

Trucking is more complicated than it was 5 years ago. More laws, more rules to interpret, more HOS nightmares, more complicated trucks, etc.
A lot of the DOT are as confused on some issues as we are, but they have to make a decision, and try to get all the facts before deciding.
I have noticed the holding on scales more than used to be. Now they quickly run a trucks credentials before turning him loose. All this record keeping by the government gives them something to check. They also look to see if you have a APU before deciding how much you gross.
All this takes time, and trucking, like everything else in the world, is getting more complicated every day..Last edited: Jul 27, 2014
