You SHOULD know in advance that you are fed up with this company so you would be BEST to get a load home so you can clean the truck out and make sure it's clean.
It's easier to clean it out to the garage than in the yard and wonder where you'll put all this crapola you horded! Take LOTS of pictures both inside and out of the truck! Hopefully you followed my previous post here http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...s-advice/94252-what-do-when-you-get-your.html on when you GOT the truck. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING about the truck all the way to the tail lights and depth of the thread on every tire!
When the truck is clean THEN call the company after you get back from the post office and tell them POLITELY that you are giving AT LEAST 2 WEEKS NOTICE! And then send it in on your satellite communications and heck even text them! The 2 week notice is world standard. If you want to give a longer notice, then do it but at LEAST 2 weeks as a bottom feeder can put on your report "didn't give notice" which will hurt down the road.
It's also best to HAVE ANOTHER JOB lined up before walking from this one. Most of these companies will respect the 2 week notice you want to give (as they want the same "respect" also) and if you talked to the recruiter and were honest with him about who you were driving for they will not check with them until you are sitting in orientation. They know the deal! You're probably not the first driver to quit and not want the POS company you're driving for to know till you're out the door!
The ONLY SECURE way to give notice to a company that you are going to quit from is by the US Mail! NOT Email! (it wouldn't hurt but it's still not the best way!) You will send in a POLITE and exact reason(s) why you are quitting, where you will be doping off the equipment, and you will ask for conformation by return mail AND in truck communications where the company would like for you to leave the equipment if they have a preference.
Get SOMEONE to sign off on the truck, down to every little scratch and dent! (You should have the list of when you were issued this POS to back up that it's in the same condition or better when you turned it in!) If they refuse then take MORE pictures and have the date imbedded on the pictures but try for a picture of the truck in front of the company sign or in the shop with a mechanic standing next to the truck. IF THEY REFUSE to sign for the truck tell them, OK, and refuse to get out of the truck until the police arrive! And they will as the company will call them because that's what bottom feeders do! This way you will have a police report and pictures of the officer to fall back on when said bottom feeder says you "abandoned" the truck somewhere! Yep, in their lot according to the police report with your name on it which you can then send to DAC/HireRight when you do your rebuttal form!
You are trying to cover your arse and these are the ways you do it! But DOCUMENT your moves! The return receipt requested form and a copy of your Termination Notice written in proper form with your name and address on the top right side then the Safety Directors name and company address on the left. Then TERMINATION NOTICE centered across the center above the body of the letter. It's even best to send 2 letters 1 to the owner or CEO! That return receipt can be used in a court of law so pay the piddling $3 or $4 dollars for them!
You have to be freaking POLITE! No name calling no I'll kick your arse, no if I see a truck of yours I'll burn it to the ground NOTHING! If you can't write with a high school education or higher get someone to help you! BUT BE POLITE! NO THREATS!
Tell them you are giving a 2 week notice. Tell them the reasons why you are quitting (NOT your dispatchers couldn't dispatch a nail up their arse) but the reasons! Ask them for a location BY RETURN MAIL and over their communications of where they want the equipment returned, but you WILL NOT return it until you have received IN HAND a letter stating where the equipment is to be dropped! And explain to them in the letter WHY, that you don't want "incorrect" information to be put on your DAC/USIS/HireRight records! See the being polite in so many words? LOL If you haven't received this letter by the date you plan to return the truck then tell them you are heading to the yard and MT if need be. (hopefully you have gotten a pay check and aren't to worried about another as you will probably not get one due to the cost of the fuel!)
When you get to the yard you should now be covered with pictures of a clean truck, a truck in better shape than what it was issued to you in (hopefully) and you have a letter in your hand telling you where to leave the truck and an inspection sheet that the shop or someone in the office has filled out for you!
If your company is like an old one I worked for that every time a bird hit your windshield or a rock dented a panel and they wrote it up, you will want a COMPLETE copy of their records from "YOUR" personnel records! ESPECIALLY if you have to sit in some form of safety review! If they want you to sign any "safety review" then you deserve a copy! If you had an escrow account as a company driver and they "paid out monies from it" you want a copy. If they try to refuse then pull a quarter out of your pocket and tell them this should cover the paper! If they still refuse then give them the name of your lawyer! If you sign your name on any paper you deserve a copy and stand on this! DO NOT BACK DOWN! This goes for leases!
Then if for some reason "incorrect" information makes it to you DAC then you have all the ammunition you need to get it removed from your records!
It's gotten bad out there and especially for you newer drivers that are bringing in this government money for these bottom feeders and then getting canned about a year later when that money dries up, need to follow these simple ways to cover your arse! Hopefully you saw the above post on what to do when you get assigned a truck and you will follow this post. You're covering your arse! These companies don't care about you or your family! YOU DO, so document it the best you can! IF you can do a vacation before you quit then even better! You'll have gotten most of your money and can rest assured that if they try for more then what ever you were to get before your termination date is a write off! At least it's not everything they owed you and I've seen them stop checks and refuse to pay! Heck, they've even sent drivers bills for "damages" or "other charges" and actually expected to be "paid" for these things! Paying these bills is left up to you! I'd laugh at them and file them where they belong!
I hope this will help you when you do decide to quit that bottom feeder company because if they were worth staying with, you wouldn't be quitting would you!
Good Luck

I just went back to copy this and I can't believe it's been buried so long and only had these 2 other posters post to it!
I need to add something that I posted to a Trans Am "Lease" thread earlier.
Turn on geotagging on your cell or camera when you take those pictures of the truck at the yard as it's being inspected as it's being turned in.
Noting says it's at the yard on such and such a date at these coordinates than a geotagged picture will prove and can't be "photoshopped" in without leaving a trail it was done after the fact! The same with the picture of the Qualcomm screen when you send in the email version of you notice and their answers. Even though you can subpoena them from Qualcomm that's expensive. You have got to love some of this new technology as it's going to be biting some of these BFI in the arse before too much longer!
The Termination letter you send in, get it notorized! Yep this will draw attention by BFI or the company you're leaving that you are dead serious about doing this in a nice, friendly and legal way and that their attempts at a false DAC/USISS/HireRight report are looking slim!
Yes, it might cost a few dollars more but that nice raised seal and signature on that letter and the return receipt requested card they signed makes a lie on that report look real foolish when you send copies of all the pictures, USPS card, notorized copy of a 2 week notice of voluntary termination notice to either HireRight with your disputal form or your hopeful new company when they ask you about that not so nice DAC report given to you by that BFI!
Want to make them look stupid?
Just give your new boss all that proof you did it right and by the new book being written on how to quit a bottom feeder! He'll question any report given by that company and if he meets him at some big trucking wing ding he'll be able to put a face to a lie! That's embarrassing for those millionaire types, human resource or safety types to be made a fool out of by some lowly ex-worker!
Especially a trucker!
This is the new post I did and has a sample termination letter you can copy but please change the names and body if you need to! It has some updated things to do over this list.

This is the packing list for rookies but should give you an idea of what to keep in the truck. Go to page 17 post #168 for my list but tweek it to what you need http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...ivers/16652-packing-list-for-students-17.html
ALSO!!! You are looking for a new job correct?? Then follow this outline for what to do when you get your new truck at your new company!! http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...s-advice/94252-what-do-when-you-get-your.html

I always will time it to go home at the end of a payroll period and get that last check first to minimize any lost pay.
Then the truck gets a thorough cleaning including a vacuum and carpet shampoo.
Then comes the time stamped photo shoot of the clean truck.
Then you live out of a suitcase for your remaining days.
Emails are considered legal documentation but you have no guarantee the company will read it. I've also heard stories of companies will not pick up private registered or certified mail because they know the tricks. You know they always say call me because they don't want documentation. I'll usually quit via Qualcomm or PeopleNet and take photos of the screen also. That is sufficient evidence. CALL ME is acknowledgement. Phone calls usually happen after that, but that's okay.
Your biggest worry and concern of future companies is vehicle abandonment. A time stamped photo with the terminal/sign in the background is sufficient evidence. I'll also go to the coordinate screen on the Qualcomm or PeopleNet. Take a time stamped picture of that. Degrees, minutes and seconds don't lie.
Alot of new prospective companies require you be terminated from your previous job before they even consider you. I like to take a couple weeks off anyways.
I never had any problems quiting. Usually a company will make a bad DAC report when things are ugly. Just be professional and mature when you quit. Companies with their high turnover rates aren't out to get everyone. Just the buttholes.BigJohn54, I_HATE_MINIVANS, Rollover the Original and 1 other person Thank this. -
This sounds all well and good but its rather difficult to do while on the road. I don't have axxess to a notary when I'm 3k miles from home, and if I find one somewhere else, chances are my truck won't fit in their driveway. And then there's the problem of being a team driver who can wind up anywhere else in the country but where id like to be. No access to my mailbox will make it hard to receive any copies or receipts of certified mail. I may just have to settle for taking pics of my qualcom messages and of the truck.

but........but..........cant i just leave it at a truck stop 2,000 miles away??
7122894003481 Thanks this. -
They had me take the truck home. So when my neighbor saw me with two 18 wheelers parked at home, he said "I've heard of you guys running two log books but this is ridiculous!"o.m.d., Rollover the Original and Freebird135 Thank this. -
