Hey my fellow flatbed drivers I am a newbie in the flat bed game, I love it so far, my income has increase over 25-30%
from driving van trailers, I never scale, and always home on the weekend. My question is do freight move at the same rate during the winter times and will the job become harder in tarping and strapping in the winter. I have enjoy these last 3 months I can say any advice on braving the winter time in flat bed

Yes. You'll be working harder for it in the winter. Frozen belts, tarps, bungies. You'll be wishing for some Texas 120 heat in which to work.
It's pretty busy right now. Make the most of it.Puppage and Arkansas Frost Thank this. -
Tarping is way better when its cold out then when its hot you get warmed up and can always take clothes off. You can only take off so much when its hot.
I bet this thread will bring out the guys that whine about tarping......281ric and Freightlinerbob Thank this. -
Hot , cold, wet or dry tarping is all the same.
Now wind on the other hand is my personal nemesis.
Oh yeah and tarps are much easier to roll when they aren't frozen.Bigchevy Thanks this. -
folding tarps when they are forzen suck, but it is a nice workout

The best part is when you roll them up in the rain with water pooling on them. Then your next load is no tarp. Yay..... Then you forget about how you rolled them up last. Then..... You have to use them when it's 10 degrees. I wouldn't trade it for a different trailer but yea sometimes I have to
" preach at myself" to get it done. -
I don't think pulling a flatbed ever gets easier, you just get used to it. Like they said wind, rain, freezing, tarping at 100 deg tarping at -20 deg, loading a trailer with 1 inch of ice on it, beating on winches to get them to slide.
Summer is half over!! -
yep using the winch bar to break your strps lose before you can loosen them up, using a hammer to get winches to move, cheater bar to shatter ice on flatbed to get your coil racks so they dont slide

I hear some guys drive van in the winter and flatbed during the season, but I don't know if that will be worth the extra expense
