How do you flatbedders decide its ok to use your secuement straps to hold the tarp as well, i guess what im asking is, i see loads where you see no straps at all so they are under the tarps, but also see loads where a few straps are seen over the tarp and some loads alot of straps and very few bungies used.?

loads with a couple of straps are generally to keep the tarps from ballooning in the wind. not every load is a perfect fit for tarps
loads with all their straps over tarps. cold be any number of reasons. most on here will probably say lazy though. i've done it a couple of times. when it's an easy load and it's extremely hot or cold outside.
loads like onions though, are better secured with straps over tarps. as the tarp can hold the entire load better then a single strap on each pallet. -
View attachment 73251 depending on the product your hauling. The tarp with straps over can help keep soft loads secure.( with out using V-boards)
Just an example with picture -
I generally prefer to hook 4-5 bungees together to throw over a tarp rather than a strap to stop ballooning. When you throw a strap over a loose section of tarp it makes rub marks and if it looses tension it just gets loose and floppy and you have to tighten it. Hooking some bungees together the tarp can loosen quite a bit and bungees will keep tension.
Basically I'm saying straps over tarps is wrong IMO.barroll Thanks this. -

Cheyenne is one place (40+ winds) will rock and break bungees. 2" ratchet strap does help keep a tarp from taking off.
Some new drivers don't have the taping skills yet to get the tarp tight, or controlled well enough to keep from throwing one over the tarp.
It never hurts to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. -
Sometimes the shipper will "Pre-Tarp" the load but will not strap it. Lowes flatbed DC does this, so do some of the sheetrock shippers. Sheetrock will always be tarped in the yard no matter what, it can not get wet or it turns into mush.
peterbilt_2005 Thanks this. -
Even loads only. Crates , pipe, etc.

I used to always put my tarps over my straps. It was just my preference. Looked cleaner that way. I don't like straps on the outside of my tarp, I just don't like the way it looked.

I picked up a load of sheetrock at a lafarge yard I believe it was in Indiana. It was a great load as Chopswithafist stated they did all the work for me. The lifted my tarps up, tarped it and strapped it. All I had to do was a double check on staps.
