We couldn't get them in Cali because our boosters weren't legal. If we had to go west we would have to split them which was so much work we either got big money or turned down the job.

Rookies and wannabes, please pay attention. If you want to heavyhaul, this is what you have to be able to do. There's a whole bunch of finesse on the steering and throttle, boatloads of patience, LOTS of planning, and trust in your abilities and your pilot cars, to do a run like this. On a run like this, I will guarantee that something didnt go according to plan, somewhere...be it road construction, low overpasses, fuel stops, weather, permits... you just dont know. When you first start, the stress can make you feel like you're going to pop a fuse. That is one helluva run. Takes one seriously tough driver to pull it off without a glitch. This is one of those jobs where when you get empty, you stand proud. And you chuckle to yourself when you hear some driver complaining about having to drive tired.

Great job, HH. Really appreciate the pics.

633-Grocer.jpg Here's a 631D on 9 on its way to Bakersfield from the Central Coast going down Grocer Grade. 4 miles of 6% then another 4 of 3%. Every year during carrot harvesting season at least one load of carrots ended upside down at the 3 mile mark. Inexperienced drivers. I had a standing rule for myself & my drivers; When heavy,STOP at the top of a hill. Shut the engine off and apply 60 lbs of air pressure for 1 minute to check for air loss. Then walk around the unit & give it a good lookin over. Only takes a few minutes & can save your ###. I took this pic of my own truck but cant remember why I was coming back from Bakersfield in my P.U.? gettin old I guess.............
