The dash is loosing data from the engine. If it does it at idle, the ECM may not be getting enough voltage. To test this, next time you are at idle and the dash starts to freak-out, try raising the RPM to 1200 or so and see if it returns to normal.

I've seen trucks do this with satellite systems, or systems that have been removed but have some wiring left over. Datalink wires are shorting or rubbed through somewhere.

Hi Heavyd, I believe I have read every thread in the International forum regarding gauge problems and did not think I needed to start another thread. I was hoping this was the best way to go. I'm having some of the same issues with my 01 5600I. My question is, I'm not sure if I have this datalink in this series truck and is there anything I can do to try to fix or repair this or is it something the dealership needs to plug into the computer to figure out what seems to be the problem? It started with the tachometer bouncing around and now I have lost the whole dashboard every once in awhile some of the gauges work and then freeze. But the tack keeps pinning at 6 o'clock and setting off 3 alarms. Any help would be great looks like my dashboard is the same as a 9400I. I was hoping you could help. Thanks in advance.

The 5000 series will have the same wiring as the 9000. You will have a data link similar to what I talked about already. The tach, speedo, oil pressure, voltage and water temp are all feed through the datalink from the engine. When the data is missing or corrupt those gauges will all go dead and usually the oil/water and STOP engine lights start to freak out too. One gauge faulting is usually a gauge or module problem. If the whole dash is going out I would say you are simply losing battery or ignition power to them. If it is ignition power that is going out the gauges will re sweep when power is restored. If it is random with no pattern the cluster circuit board may be going bad. There are lots of things to check out. Unless you are good with electrical and some electronic diagnostics I would recommend a visit to the dealer. Most good shops have a spare dash module they can swap out and go for a road test to see if the problem is the wiring, or the module.

First thank you for the reply Heavyd, second where is the "Thanks" button. I have a couple more questions if you don't mind. I will try to explain best I can. I am pretty good with wiring. I do 90% of the work on my truck and I was an ASE cert mechanic for a few years before I was a truck driver. Some history, I am the second owner of this truck and it has always been a dump truck so no satellite but I did pull the ABS breaker and noticed it was tripped when I reset it it keeps tripping. I would assume I have a short somewhere. What does the ABS have to do with the cluster? Before I found this forum I had bought a used cluster hoping this might work. When I pluged it in the gauges did different things again it seems like I'm getting power to the cluster, now my volt gauge reads normal, my oil is at 6 o'clock the other gauges are still not working but sweet every now and then. If I put in a used cluster does the computer needs to be reset? Thanks Again

The "Thanks" button is in the lower left corner of the post, right below my name, picture and information. The ABS will actually communicate through the same wires the cluster uses. The abs doesn't communicate to the cluster or vise-versa. The engine will talk to the cluster and abs. The abs only talks to the engine. I have seen the ABS module go bad and it will corrupt the datalink and cause issues like this. You can try to unplug the abs module and see if that clears up the gauge issue. The abs module is located above the clutch pedal on the inside of the firewall, (I think...) The cluster does not need to be programmed. It is direct plug n play.

Hey did you ever figure out the original problem with high temp and low oil pressure lights flashing and guages sweeping five seconds after u turn the key on and after they do their initial sweep test?? i have a truck in here do the exact thing.. i cleaned the battery terminals and ecm wires.. check all grounds.. tried a new cluster.. what else?? thanks!!

Anytime the cluster does this is when it has lost data communication with the engine. Something is wrong the datalink wiring. In rare cases the ABS module can be faulty and shorting out the datalink. You can try to disconnect it for a simple test.
