How much does a replacement or new air compressor cost? I got one that is around $1250. Does this sound about right? It seems hard to find one online. Also what would cause an air compressor to give out? Any preventive maintenance tips in this area? 2007 international 9200i with 600k miles.

They are a simple pump. Take the head off one and see. It's just a lawn mower motor without a sparkplug. Park your truck, it will never weqar out. Usually the governor goes bad and someone replaces the whole thing. The governor is on the side of it and most have a rubber cap on the top. Remove the cap and you can adjust the amount of Pressure you want in the tank.

ISX? They are usually pretty good. Not sure about the price, that doesn't seem too bad. Usually with ISX compressors the head gets all carbon plugged and it will be slow or will not build air. You can replace just the head. If the compressor is bypassing too much engine oil, then yes, it is time for a new one. Make sure you air system doesn't have any major leaks that would make the compressor work more than it needs to. Also, when you have your air dryer purging every 30 seconds that means there is leak somewhere before the tanks normally and your compressor with cycle way more often and simply wear out quicker.
