My brother-in-law is driving a 2001 int'l 9900 with a 475 hp ISX. He is loosing coolant out the overflow. Thought it might be a head gasket, drove it from Edmonton all the way back to Bracebridge, ON. Mechanics checked everything out, pressure test coolant system, oil analysis, etc. no head gasket leak, coolant system maintains pressure test,
    no coolant in oil.
But cooling system is still pressuring up but mechanics are stumped. So he's on his way back out to Alberta again, topping up the coolant every once and in a while.
Any thoughts on what else to check ?
A friend had a 1996 FLD with a 3406E that did that this, it turned out to be the air operated temperature control valve on the sleeper heater core blew a seal so the air system was pressuring up the coolant line. Does a 9900 have this ?

    thanks

One to two gallons a day.

mine did that 12 years ago. it was the head gasket, but for some reason the pressure test did not reveal that. 1-2 gal a day is a lot. I guess you could make sure your rad cap is good & at the working pressure relief.

    Ruthless and uncleal13 Thank this.

Any fuel in the coolant? Had a similar issue with my 9900i, injector cups were leaking and putting fuel into the coolant system, and pushing coolant/fuel out the cap. Every bit of 2 gal a day. Took a couple days to realize what was going on. If this is the case, be sure to flush the coolant system after replacing the cups.

Ok, simple things first, try a new rad cap and check the neck of the coolant reservoir where the cap actually threads on and seals if he has the plastic tank. Those tanks are only plastic and do crack or split sometimes and cause issues like this. The air compressor is another part that can cause pressure build up in the cooling system.

I had the same problem. Change the pre cooler and it fixed the problem.
