I'm not necessarily going to join the landstar crew I work for prime soon to be a lease op, and I'm just curious how landstar works, if you don't have a dispatcher how in the world do you get loads? I've read that you can buy your trailer? So obviously no drop n hook. Just a curious soul here.
a few questions

You can run one from them or bring your own. 65% to pull theirs with drop and hook opportunities, or bring your own for 72-77%. You pick your own loads, so you dispatch yourself. You work as much or little as you want.
-
So you just gran loads off a load board? Or is there a special program for landstar O/Os?
-
Just book the load off of the board. As time goes on you can establish relationships with agents and get loads directly from them.
-
So why the heck do you even work for a company? You have your on tractor, trailer and you are your on dispatch. I Can't understand that part

So you get experience and practice booking your own loads. It ain't as easy as you may think. You can book a load from a broker and its gone. Yes Land star takes a big cut, but you have to look at their benefits. They have a large freight base with many customers and you can find loads just about anywhere. You have a large company with discounts on fuel, parts, tires, cars.
And again, you get your feet wet. It is a whole new ball game going from picking up your dispatch sheet (or the info on a qualcom) to have to do it yourself. Reading up on the land star sub thread will provide you with information. Its also better for insurance because you get time to get experience and when you go independent you get a better price. honestly, don't do the prime lease. Go and the year long Schneider lease and run their choice board. It is essentially what landstar is but a different company. If you struggle there, they put you back on mileage so you don't go bankrupt.

here is a link to the one of many threads about running a lease and choice board. the people there are willing to explain the board and how it works. -
Lower operating costs because of fleet discount pricing.
Direct access to one of the better paying load boards and broker/agent networks -
That makes more sense. I didn't realize they had special load boards just for landstar contractors, I'm not old or wise enough to be a o/o by my self just yet. Nor will I ever want to be, however landstar sounds nice. You are an independent trucker without the hassle of insurance and paying these high fuel prices. Plus you go where you want to go. Which to me is the biggest thing
Let me rephrase that I don't want to be a independent trucker. BUT you kinda are at landstar
