Hi, I'm shopping for a truck with A solid/reliable engine with the least emissions headaches that I can drive in/out of California. My budget is around 50 to 55k. What kind of truck/engine/transmission/miles, I should be looking at. I'll be pulling referees though. The more I read/search about the subject, the more confused I get. I know that repairs are a fact of life in trucking, but I'm still looking for the least amount of trips to the mechanic. Any recommendations based on life time experience/professional work, will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In your price range it's gonna be hard to beat a Cascadia w/ a DD15 in it. Great mileage and seems to be the least breakdown prone. All of the SCR and/or DPF equiped engines are more prone to problems though. Upside is most of the trucks using DEF get really good fuel mileage when they are running.

Stay away from the Maxxforce equiped Prostars, there is a reason they are a bargain compared to the other trucks.

I'm currently driving a 2010 Prostar w/ Cummins, I've only got 6k miles in it but so far I'm running 7.1 mpg hauling a mix of very light to max out on gross loads all over the western 11. Talked to a couple L/O's who are leasing the same setup and getting around the same mileage. Word of caution, the '08 to '10 cummins have a nasty habit of occasionally eating it's egr system for lunch and dumping massive amounts of coolant into the cylinders. Other then that they are pretty reliable.
