Hi frieghtwipper... If you were to look a little bit on this site, you will see he has his own post going giving that information.... It sounded like you do your research, but must have missed his post...
You sound like you are up to the challenge but there are many posts running on this board that give information on just how L/P is working for them... Those are the one's that should be followed to gain knowledge on what works for them and figure out if it will fit into your plan, if you are serious about going the L/P route...
I think MOST drivers fail to do their homework before jumping into a L/P and then complain about their own failure..
Bye the way, it is no different than some drivers thinking about buying a truck, and jumping into O/O without proper planning first... Running your own business is FAR different the just driving a truck...
Good luck to you in whatever you plan to do......

I'm currently not "up for the challenge", I don't know enough nor have enough money saved to even consider L/P or O/O. Just here trying to learn.
However you are correct, most drivers do fail to do their homework.. I think that's why many fail when doing L/P.
Which is why this site is a wonderful place to learn and share which helps us all in the end.ccorley78 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
wow thank you very much for all that you do and share.
You deserve to do very well by pulling flatbed and oversize loads. -
-
If saying " no" is calling your own shots I guess so ......
Can you pick your loads , set rates or change delivery times ?
A lease is a tax dodge for everyone involved , everyone makes a little more and pays less taxes..
If you took that 80k figure that was being tossed around and backed out a top shelf benefit package the net would be more realistic ......Last edited: Sep 25, 2014
blairandgretchen and 123456 Thank this. -
I'll be filing for my authority next year. It'll work out a little better after the turn of the year. -

There are lots of smaller companies out their like Sammons that have L/O programs with no company trucks to compete with, some good and some bad. Just have to put in the hard work to look for them.
You shouldn't limit yourself to looking just at company lease programs, you can also lease a truck directly from one of the manufactures (Western Star and PACCAR both have leases available) or from a third party (Loan Mountain, Arrow) and then lease on to any company you choose (Landstar, Mercer, ect) like any O/O does. That is probably the best way to go if you want to lease as your not married to the company you are leasing the truck from for your income. -
-
Sammons looks like the best I've seen...
- 75% of 100% of line haul, plus 100% of fuel surcharge, tarp and stops revenue
- Annual bonus program up to 4% of truck gross profit
- You choose your loads from Sammons load board, agent freight, and public load boards
- Advisors to help you through the lease to own program
- No down payment or up-front cash requirement
for our truck lease to own program - No fixed payment
- Past Safety Performance (PSP) bonus - up to $1,300
Rare to see a van company offer all that though.
As much as it's temping to just lease a truck and call the shots, I'm not ready for that in multiple ways.
The smart move is just to jump into LTL and rack in the cash for a bit and go from there.
That's my next move, I just got done with my one year of OTR and I'm done with it.. time to move to better things.
