We were both walking up steps to the rest area restrooms when he started and said.. did you see that lady over there?
    I said what lady?
He said there's an older small lady adjusting her flatbed load and he told me she told him she's been doing flatbed for 24 years!
It was indeed strange, it was a small lady whom appeared to at least in her mid 50s.. I saw her fiddling around with her load.
Then I noticed the guy speaking was wearing an Old Dominion shirt and I said.. and you're earning more money than she is I bet.
His answer was he smiled and said he has a wonderful job and is making a lot of money.

Eventually I said I was looking into LTL and he gladly shared some info.

Top pay is .62CPM for SOLO and .68CPM for team.
Solo goes in hotel every night and if you decide to stay out they'll pay for a hotel during your 34 hour reset.
He said all he does is drop and hooks at company terminals.
After you're out 6 days you can take 2 days off or stay out another week and then take 3 days off... that is if you want to.
Paid for everything he does.. fuel.. drop and hook etc. He didn't tell me the hourly pay though.
He was extremely happy, happiest truck driver I ever saw and kept saying how wonderful Old Dominion is and along with the money.

Anyway towards the end of the conversation he did tell me Old Dominion is extremely strict and doesn't put up with ANY BS at all.
    He gave me an example...
He said there was a driver with them for 15 years.. no accidents or tickets EVER, this driver even won "safety awards" at Old Dominion... anyway one day this driver pulled into the terminal and beliefly parked with his doubles still connected and he went out and peed in between his equipment.. he was fired on the spot just like that.
Supposedly Old Dominion has cameras everywhere at their terminals and someone is always watching.

    So that was my experience...
I will say it was nice to talk to an extremely happy truck driver that loves their job.. don't see that often.

Former ODFL employee here (probably should have stayed but that's another topic...) The team drivers in the sleepers make $100k+ they usually haul the trailers full of expedited "red label" stuff and bedbug trailers. Never heard of solo guys in the sleepers but it's possible they do it. Line haul is usually out and back same day/night in a day cab...did a little of that on Saturday and Sunday and occasionally during week daytime when too many trailers were sitting without power. Mostly I was P&D. Top hourly is $25.68 but they do not pay overtime until after 60 hours in most states unless there is a state law that dictates 40 (like Washington state). Usually start new guys around $20. I don't necessarily agree with hourly wage local drivers and dock workers still being exempt from overtime laws, but it's their company and they can run it however they want to. It's still one of the better ones overall.

How strict they are depends entirely on the terminal. Carlisle, PA they'll fire you for not tucking your shirt in (exaggerating but not by much.) In general they are not quite as bad with the nitpicky micromanaging and rulemongering as most accounts Ive heard about FedEx or Conway, or certainly UPS. I really enjoyed working for them in Seattle and am kind of sorry I left for supposedly greener pastures, but that's life sometimes!

The flatbed lady probably does okay enjoys her job too. No way she'd have made it that long in this industry if she didn't.

I've wondered that about Old Dominion drivers; every time I pass an Old Dominion driver they're laughing and talking to themselves. I've seen them doing that also while eating lunch at truck stops.

I've interviewed with OD. A great company. Talked about this before, The OT after retarded hours wasn't worth it for my area and for me.
No close barn, The TM and I had a 45 minute schedule interview. I really liked the fella, told the truth and didn't sell the company on crap. OD can happen for others no doubt if the shop is close, I just can't commute 2 hours round trip and OT $ after stupid hours.

OD maybe strict, Not as strict as being a redheaded step child of UPS ( UPSF )
