You are hired but you're in training mode when you solo out you know its official and if for whatever reason you dont solo out , you will be let go and they will put the reason why you couldent solo out on your dac report ..... In orientation while doing the skills test you can take your time and get out as many times as you want . The instructer told us if you hit 1 tire they'll let it slide but hit another one and your going home (he said this after we all finished the course). You treat the 13 speed like a 8 speed and you learn the high gear spliter while your in training. Just remember it doesnt have to be perfect aslong as you dont hit anything and put it in the hole your fine, they're looking to see if YOU can keep control of the truck and as long as you do youll be fine good luck ..... So ill be leaving monday with my trainer im exited but my wife is feeling sad everything was ok till we got to this point and now that the time has come shes getting sad but we talked about it and we knew what the job requirements were and one of those is being away from home , so guys you really gotta realize that this isnt a change of job but a change of life style and reality doesnt hit till you're one weekend away from leaving for 2/3 weeks at a time good luck guys
Its official may orientation 6/4/13

Away from home..........People with kids I have no idea how they do it.

I was a trainer for May. Oftentimes within the first couple of days on the truck the significant other was on the phone with the student crying, whining, complaining, etc. It is a real distraction and one that is not very conducive for learning and concentration.
Couples can think they have thought the decision through as far as transitioning into this vocation, however, until you do it, one has no way of knowing how they, or, the spouse are going to react.
What I found is that the spouse at home is really supportive with the decision initially because there's most often a need for income to be generated, sort of survival mode. However, when the man leaves, especially when there are little kids involved, reality sinks in and everything changes.
Good luck!Lux Prometheus and irishramblernv Thank this. -
The splitter the guy got sent home for, Bigdog talking about low/high range switch I guess. on a 13 it is from 4 Low range to 5 high range I take it. 10 speed was 5 to 6. did I get that right.....

As I said, a lot of folks are going into this industry because they are desperate for a job. Trucking is one of the only industries that is hiring, besides nursing or the I.R.S.
I'm not saying that desperation can't be positive motivator, it was for me. However, this industry chews guys up and spits them out. The numbers don't lie.
I remember my first solo trip out. The reality of everything that had transpired in my life from the months proceeding my transition into trucking just sort of hit me like a ton of bricks one night way out in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska.
It was like a black cloud came over me. I was lonely, really lonely. Lonelier than I had ever felt in my life. I shed a few tears, then realized I had to suck it up and deal with it. It got better. I learned the system, started making friends in the industry and built a support system which helped immeasurably.
Even though things are so much smoother in my life now with my job, family life, etc., when I'm away from home, I still get this feeling that I'm detached and disconnected from my wife and family. Almost like, out of sight, out of mind. That's with being able to be home every week in my current job. I just deal with it and realize it is what it is.northoceanbeach, Lux Prometheus and Hondaaccord9093 Thank this. -
