Benefits, are tremendous. The drivers are offered benefits under the same umbrella that is offered to management....but not offered to "regular" employees.
I wouldn't mind working for them. But, some recent scuttlebutt prevents me from even considering.
Don't ask...it's in the "rumour" stage and worthless at this point. -
I've pulled enough van to know it sucks. I'm glad there are drivers that like to sit around a lot and get paid less for van freight. I'll work harder and pull a flat or step. -

Brickman...I just noticed you live in Southeast WY...any particular Big town? I live a just a couple hours to the west...smack dab in the middle of nowhere. (and if you know southern WY...you know exactly where that is, lol)

Good for you. I know a lot of van drivers really complain about how much they sit.
One thing for me is that van hauling is not challenging. I like the challenge of platform freight, securing it so that it does not shift or damage in transit. OD freight is even more fun.
In over 3 yrs of flatbed I never had a freight claim for any thing.
Now I haul crude and am home every night, but still miss flatbed. -
Yes, hauling a van can be pretty braindead work, but those wallyworld folks only sit for their 10 hr break, otherwise they keep 'wm moving. And of course, deliveries to stores and DC's are all drop n hook.
Now, you will be stuck in a 63-65 mph truck, and like Danc said, they run 100% legal. No ifs ands or buts. -
Back to the original question... we appear to have gotten waaaaay off base LOL
I've seen recruitment ads for Smith stating up to .75 a mile. I'm sure there is a catch to it though.
One of the most reliable "per mile" rates I've seen. .53 per mile for teams offered by Roadway. But that is subject to the "new" company rules since they too were bought out.
Realistically, you should expect an average of about .36 a mile. Note: I said average. The higher paying (legitimate) companies generally offer as much as .41 to start for experienced drivers, with no up to claims. While still others offer .25 a mile, no benefits, and you pay your own taxes.
We can't truthfully say who pays more. Cause I doubt anyone really knows. "More" being defined by X number of dollars and benefits.
I really think we should address, What do you consider to be enough?
What do you need to insure the security and well being of you and your family....realistically? And, I'm not talking about whether your wife/self drives a new Hummer and live in a $500K house. Or if you take annual vacations to Cancun or France.
What to you need to live and retire comfortably?
