Okay, well...LTL is your bag, eh?
I'll hit a few main topics here and hopefully this will shade in a few blank spots for you-
- Dispatch & operations- You'll be working LTL, of course. Unless you're going to be one of the team shuttle runners (which isn't a bad gig, at all.) 700 Richards Run rd will be your home terminal. I no longer work for FFE, but I still have a few friends over there. They say they're sharing the CR England yard for storage down the road, so expect to roll through there every now and then.
Dispatch on LTL sounds more complex than it really is with FFE. They give you a manifest load when you get off your weekend time, you hook to your loaded, well almost always loaded trailer. You will make anywhere from 2-6 drop, after your trailer is empty or nearly empty you'll start doing pickups. Sometimes you'll be moving pallets around to throw fresh product on the bulkhead and rotating it out with old. You will be pulling a multi-temp trailer, meaning you'll have to pull down styrofoam bulk heads that are used to separate products with differentiating products temps.
It is vital that you don't mix pallets up. Even as OTR I did several dozen LTL manifests in my time at FFE. My first one, I accidentally put an ice cream pallet in with a produce square. It ended poorly, with 20 boxes of ruined ice cream and I never heard the end of it (for good reason, it was a stupid mistake on my part...BUT an easy one to make if you've got your head up your ### like I did.)
All of your work will be done off that manifest, dispatch will occasionally call you "Hey derp, mind picking up x lb's of frozen dog turds bound out of the east side of hell?" and you have no option but to capitulate. They do that somewhat often since FFE tries to bill the LTL division as the ultimate solution to flexibility and ease of use.
Also you will be working a state close to NJ, expect to hit the boroughs at some point in time. New England in general is where dispatch sends guys when their loads aren't ready and you have a day to kill. Don't panic, you'll get used to it and be that much better of a driver for it. Say heeeeyyy to the gals at hunts point, they had a couple good looking ones at the gates when I was still hitting it out there. You'll get to see them without a doubt.
- Equipment- You're looking at a Cascadia or a Prostar. No if-ands-or-buts. I've never seen a Volvo (save for mine as an OTR) yanking an LTL manifest. They're equipment is fairly new, but not always the best maintained. Idling? You're gonna get the opti-idle in the freightshaker and that icon system in the Prostar. Rumor with the prostates is play with the fuses; a couple guys found a way to idle their trucks but they were catching hell from dispatch about their fuel usage so they would only idle when the icon system didn't work...which is always...Have someone show you once you get to know and trust a few guys.
The trailers are pretty typically the worst equipment you'll deal with. They get banged up and tossed around. FFE has taken to railing freight out of Burlington to Chicago since it's cheaper than shuttle drivers, not quite as quick. In the long run it means those trailers just go to #### quicker. Watch specifically for brake issues, drums and pads were always an issue with these guys. That and tires. Dunno how many tires I had blow out with FFE...too ###### many... - Home time & pay- Arguably the best part of LTL/FFE is that you're home regularly, and they pay doesn't entirely suck. The downside is that the work isn't the most fun and FFE sets some pretty funky PU/DO times on those manifests. I know a lot of the guys were unplugging their peoplenet units and going back to paper logs- it was a really common practice.
Overall, FFE isn't the worst company. A good place to get your foot in the door and make a little money, and for sure the Duff Brothers are going to squeeze every cent worth of work they can out of that division. Hell, it's the whole reason they bought it. - Dispatch & operations- You'll be working LTL, of course. Unless you're going to be one of the team shuttle runners (which isn't a bad gig, at all.) 700 Richards Run rd will be your home terminal. How much do they pay for each stop? -
They do pay stop pay, and that's how a good bulk of your money is earned. I can't remember exactly what it was when I was there, so I'm not going to say for sure. I know it was above $20 but below $60, I think I'm getting that confused with OTR additional stop pay. Would be something to ask recruiting.yankeefan Thanks this. -
