I'm a Shaffer driver (at the moment), Crete's reefer division.. starting pay will now be .48 CPM practical mile and on my qualcomm they said we will have guaranteed detention pay.

Crete will now start people at .45
A lot of companies seem to be raising their pay lately....
Anyway for those wondering it's not a bad places to work here as a company OTR driver.
Cheap Freightshakers and Crete has a lot of short runs. Shaffer has longer runs but crazy appointment times and a lot of Northeast.
BUT the miles and money is fine.. at least certainly compared to most other companies out there.
If you're doing OTR for less than .40 it's time to look elsewhere because you're getting underpaid.

Companies are using every avenue possible to lure in the drivers but many times its their insurance company that's disqualifying them.

also allowing pets now in company trucks.

I own the truck and I don't want some stinking animal in it! My dogs stay at home where they should be. I have enough to do with taking care of me and managing my time than to have some mutt taking some of that time.
But pay is relative in the overall picture. Heartland has always pasted something like 50 or 52 cents a mile, or whatever, on the back of their trailers, yet they have as much or more turnover as anyone. Higher pay per mile may not play out at some fantastic take home in the final analysis. I hope, for Crete's drivers, it does work out to be a killer deal. But so many things can make it all not worth it. Customer base, operations personnel, and a host of other issues. That is why, whenever I have talked with a carrier I was looking at, pay wasn't even the first question. I want to get a feel for how the company works and thinks. Then we can discuss pay.
I always wondered, if Crete/Schaeffer/Hunt was such a great place to work, why do they have to put so much effort into recruiting. I think they just about take the cake when it comes to recruiting stuff all over their trailers. That is darn close to a turn off to anyone but a cherry. Bet if I looked UNDER a Crete trailer, it would say "our greatest resource sits 5 feet higher"Last edited: Nov 26, 2014

Wow .48 CPM ? That is very nice, frieghtwhipper, how many miles a week are you getting with shaffer? And what's a average paycheck like if ya don't mind?
-
Shaffer is .48 CPM on ALL miles PLUS extra pay on loads under 200 miles long.
What OTR company isn't looking for drivers?
OTR sucks and people don't want to do it, that's why.
Doesn't matter for what company... people want to be home and a schedule.Lone Ranger 13 Thanks this. -
up until recently with my truck breaking down every other week and these ice storms I was averaging about 2800 miles a week when I'm out 7 days.
Where else are you gonna do OTR for .48 CPM on ALL miles?
Plus you get a penny raise here every year which caps at .54 CPM
and profit sharing with comes to a couple grand or so.
Health insurance I pay $25 a week for and it's $1000 deductible.
Trainers here get paid on ALL miles the truck turns and an extra $125 a week.
They make a killing.
As far as the numbers go, I think we have it best for a company OTR driver at least.
Tell you, makes it easy to recruit drivers.. it's fun when I see a CR England driver next to me and I know I'm earning nearly .20 CPM more than him lol.Brandson Thanks this.
