Food Service Distribution (SYGMA)

I stumbled across this thread during a Google search. BearGator65, hopefully you are still out there, because I need some dirt on SYGMA. I currently work for a SYGMA center, but we are considering relocating. The center I currently work for is less than ideal after some changes in management. We (my family) are thinking of moving to a SYGMA in Texas, either The Colony or Dallas. Do you have the scoop on these centers?

I do like the center I am at now as far as routing. We are rarely out for more than about 24 hours. Most routes dispatch between 7 and 10 p.m. and are back usually late the next morning. Management is a nightmare, though. It didn't used to be like this, but it just keeps getting worse. I would like to keep working for the same company, just think I'll need to relocate to do it.

I work for reinharts it is hard work i am home every day but the hours are long. you can make good money most drivers make at least 40k but you could make more.

 

Sorry to bump, but I am interested in finding out about sysco/sygma and it seems like there are a lot of knowledgeable people here.

I wanted to know around how many total drivers work for sysco and how many for sygma/ ive read they have around 9300 rigs total, so that would mean they would need more drivers than that, right?

 

Are they still busy? I know here in Ca. they lost the burger king account to mbm. I know alot of guys quit at the stockton yard. Dont see too many of their rigs out and about.

 

My hubby may want to get with Sygma once he gets his year with the company he is with now just cause they are local. It would be the Lancaster one. Anyone know anything about them????? I know it is hard work but heard the pay is between 800 and 1000.

 

I'm still around. Not sure about how business is in Stockton. Lancaster is a union shop, so if you like unions.... I'm not rally fond of them, though. They tend to interfere with too much for my liking.

As far as how many trucks and drivers SYGMA / SYSCO have, that's not really an issue. There's always a need. It's hard work, and while their retention rates are high, there's still attrition. That means there will always be an opportunity for a good driver.

SYGMA / SYSCO are good companies to work for. You're home fairly often, the benefits are excellent. They're one of the few companies in the U.S. that still has a pension plan.

###### boy! i was looking into doing food delivery for usfood service or northstar. They are merged now I think. But it sounds like all of them basically do the same type of labor and are held to similar standards if not the same. I know that Northstar was advertising 51k starting out and 70k max. I am a trainer and I make really good money, but I never get to enjoy it and I want to be home more. I have been looking at all of the local driving jobs, and they don't pay enough for me to live comfortably with having to pay a mortgage and car notes and raise kids. Are there any local alternatives with decent pay besides braking my back doing food delivery?

 

I work for Sygma in Illinois. Be ready to work your ### off as a driver. I'm talking the food delievering aspect not the line haul. Everything is pretty good. We have sleepers/daycabs. If there is ever a time you cannot make it to a hotel our Sygma will actually pay you $70 (I think, not exact) for sleeping in the sleeper. It's a #####. I had to do that once because I was on a team route and my other driver called in and I ran out of my hours and couldn't make it to a hotel.

It was the dead of summer and we can't let our trucks run because of idle shut off. Lets just say it was so hot in that m'fer that I made a make shift bed in the trailer with the reefer still running.

Our trucks, thanks to the Cadac only run 60mph and 58 in our state of Illinois. Talk about slow. That's why I love taking a rental out.

Our location has a real problem of having trucks on hand. Doesn't make sense. You are a truck company, shouldn't you have trucks? Anyway, your dispatch time might be 9PM but if they don't have a truck you won't leave until someone else gets back off a route which might be 1, 2, 3 hours away. Then when you get rolling to your stops, you'll get a call from the office asking you why you're late like they have no idea!

DUH! You guys had no trucks! I had to wait 3 hours for someone else to return off a route before I could even leave! Happened to me before.

Other wise they have good management.

They service their trucks through Ryder. If you break down you call Ryder and they are usually there between the hour depending on your location. I had a flat tire in Wisconsin. Called Ryder and they were there in 30 minutes and had me rolling within the next hour.
