Well after several months of investigating my different options of getting into the oilfield either in ND or Texas, I decided to take the leap of faith and come out to West Texas. A friend of mine had come out to Midland a few weeks before me and landed a job with a rig moving company driving a winch truck. He assured me he could get me a job with the company he worked for, so I headed West from Carolina and got out here about two months ago.The company is a small tight knit company with about 20 drivers, I came in and filled out an application and was hired on the spot. The put me in what the call a road winch. It took me a few weeks to get comfortable with operating the winch, but now its second nature. We have been slammin the last month or so, and work on average 80 hours a week. My check this past week was for 96 hours and this week I worked 77 hours. When you finally get a day off, you enjoy, and it and get caught up on laundry, groceries, and any other things you need to get done before you hit it again for 7 to 10 days.
As far as housing I got lucky because my friend had brought out his RV, so I share his RV with him and we live in a mobile home park. there are actually four of us all living right next to each other that work for the same company. Apartments are available but they aren't cheap, and houses for rent are outrageous.....supply and demand I guess.
The company I work with is laid back, and they don't have a problem with out of state guys going home every few months. I will fly back to Carolina in three weeks for 5 days and enjoy sometime with the wife and daughter in Myrtle Beach. I will go home about every three months, so my goal is to stay out here for at least a year and make as much money as possible and pay off all of my debt then reevaluate my goals at the one year mark. So far I have no regrets, the money is great and I like working long hours. Since I have been here I have already been given a $3.00 raise and we have a great crew that all work good together.
When time permits I will update this thread.
