Hey everyone,
I just wanted to share a junction in my life with you all. I finished CDL school in November, and I had a choice between an oilfield mud hauling job which payed 17 an hour then 20 an hour plus per diem plus free housing or VIA Metropolitan Transit, a unionized bus operator position which pays 14 per hour then works up to 25 per hour over 5 years.
Guys, I picked VIA.
Because, well, a few reasons, first and foremost, the hazard of working near H2S, I just couldn't bring myself to put myself in that position, plus yeah, theres free housing, overtime etc, but its not a stable long term job. Im 24 years old.
Most of the people I've talked to including some OTR veterans, said the bus operator was ideal, since you're at home, the pay is decent, the hours are great, and its a straight truck automatic.
I felt kinda bad that I turned the oilfield job down, though I feel I made the right choice.
What do you guys think?
I feel I made the best choice

You're probably feeling that it's much more of a lame job, it's doesn't have the glamour and the "badassness" of the oilfield.
It sounds to me that you put your priorities in order when it was time to choose. I would keep them like that and find something else to feed your sense of adventure.Puppage Thanks this. -
Waste of class a cdl school IMHO. 3 months at the bus job you decide you don't like it you will have to do refresher for anyone to hire you for T/T.

Where do you live? I want to make that kind of $$$

Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. You're the only one that knows what is best for you.

Feel bad you turned the oilfield job down? Look up the 5 day weather forecast for Watford City north dakota this week. Then tell me how bad you feel

You made a good choice. Maybe not for some of the right reasons. H2S fears??? LOL Can you remember one incident of anyone being killed or even made sick. It can happen. But chances are better of you getting hurt in "Knockout" game the banger scum are playing. And if that scared you the roads, weather, people you encounter, etc would have been a real shock. Not many planned training programs like the one it sounds like you chose. Hang in there. Should work into decent living and steady lifestyle. You need to be a bit of a rounder to pick up and set off to strange places and jobs. You either are or aren't that type. Neither is "right". Just different strokes for different folks.

By the way, I think it's cool somebody did their research and had a couple of decent choices straight out of school.
