    Hello All!

    Student in training right now, 5 weeks to be exact. After my training, I'm very interested in moving to Texas and working in the oilfields. Hearing a lot about Midland, Odessa.

    Any advice? Leads?

    Thank you :)

    Got a few questions for you!

    * getting hazmat?
    * how old?
    * tank or flatbed?
    * clean MVR period?

    Do you have enough money ( I don't need to know really it's for you to answer to yourself), Both area's are pretty darn expensive.. and you gotta live. One of the things to ask any company out here is if they provide housing or references to housing. Rv's are a major housing item here, cheapest way to go and how alot of companies house people.

    The only company my husband can think of off the top of his head is Salazar, they are hiring nights right now. Their website says experience or willing to learn pump or vacuum. So perhaps, fill out an app on-line, then follow up with a phone call... ask worse that can happen is they say no.
    These are just a couple companies I know are in the area they may or may not hire noob's... Rogers, Stallion, Globe, O-tec, Rock Water, Bob Phillips ( actually out of weatherford but working in Midland/Big Spring/ Garden city area)... Their are alot of job's, will they hire a new student AND can you get affordable housing, that I don't know.
    Let's put it this way...passed just today going from Midland back to Big Spring a place renting "cabins" ( most people would think they were tool sheds) for $99 per night.
    I'm not trying to be harsh or putting the idea down.... just be very prepared!! I'll answer any question I can. I'm not a driver, my husband is, but then again I'm in Midland, Odessa, Big Spring and Stanton much more than he is.
    My advice look up the companies I mentioned, google to see if you can find more...someone else may have some more names. Fill out any on-line apps, follow with a call to HR, get as many good leads as you can. A good solid "we will hire you would be nice...but not totally likely.
    Have a copy of your MVR and everything you would need to transfer your Drivers License to Texas. Get copies...certified if you know someone who will do it cheaper ( it's not 100% nessesary though).
    Ummm if you come down here without an actual job, I would try staying in Big Spring or another out laying area. Be slightly cheaper anyway. IF you can get a camper or rv ( tenting right now...not a great idea..."wintery mix" expected tomorrow.) $155-$300 is average for the parks for a month. Drive to Midland and Odessa. Yeah it is cheaper that way, unless you can "share" with a couple guys in your class that might have the same idea.
    Good luck!! ( sorry for the wall of text)

    Awesome information! Thank you very much!

    Answers:

    * getting hazmat? Yes, plan is to get tanker and hazmat
    * how old? 27 in June
    * tank or flatbed? Either, but whatever pays the best
    * clean MVR period? Yep :)

    Heard living is expensive, same with North Dakota. I have no problem living in a man camp. Willing to look at any option. A tent? Awesome, I'm from Montana :)

    My husband reminded me that Texas inacted a new law starting on the 31 of last month, you have to have a D.O.T. card before you can transfer your license. Some companies will require you do that for their insurance. ( which is why I asked age, insurance companies.. ugh)

    IDK about actually tenting, the parks may not allow it, due to liability, at this time of year. ( I only mentioned it cause, I read a thread where someone said they were)

    Look into Frac'ing companies, I know they have "man camps". Some companies, like the one my husband works for do also. I think all but one of they guys that works for the company lives in a "company trailer" and he owns his own, the company pays the lot bill.

    Living here is expensive, but is very do-able. Don't discount other areas. In one of the other threads one of the guys said that the San Angelo area isn't nearly as expensive as here and their are some good companies in that area as well.

    Once you decide, if you have specific questions about the area, I'll try and answer.... or find the answer.

    Just to clarify; they are requiring a DOT medical card before they issue a cdl. As a matter of fact, all states are going to be requiring this as they are doing away with paper medical cards. Eventually, DOT will be able to run your license and see your medical card right there...but in the mean time, we are still required to carry around the paper card.

    Is everybody about ready for their bar code and implanted RFID chip? The time is coming.

    For West Texas, you might want to look at places in Sterling City, Mertzon, don't know about availability or prices but sings are out, some companies got their yards in those cities too.
    Big Lake got plenty yards for work but housing is either $$$ or inexistant. San Angelo is 70 mi away so commuting will be quite a pain..
    Along 67 south from Angelo you got more than a few outfit that working oilfield, and 87 north (fron angelo) the same .

    West texas aint just Midland/Odessa.
    heck they got stuff in Rankin or Crane - not much of cities to speak of but job is there, housing no clue

    Sorry, yeah...I took a couple allergy pills when I got home, try as I might I don't focus well after taking them....why I waited til I got home. I'd be a hazard on the road, well if I managed to stay on it.

    I want my barcode in pink and grey urban camo. :yes2557: lol

    Hubby's dot Medical just needed a redo, you know they took his Drivers license cut the corner and gave him a "paper license" til a new plastic one arrives? He just...I mean just got that one 2 months ago, only the medical was expiring.

    the sa angelo area is not that expensive on rent . they have some nice 1 bed room apartments anywhere from 400 to 650 a month. prices on personal items and grocery are not bad either, and a lot of companies on the out skirts to work for. if you decide to go there just stay away from north side of town and you be fine.
