Don't waste your money on CDL class. Get the book from the DMV, read it and take the written tests. If you don't get a job with the permit then you can rent a truck and take the road test.

This is the second time someone has mentioned this option to me on these boards. I'd like to hear others' thoughts on this. I guess I'll do a search. Meanwhile, if anyone in this thread has thoughts about the need for schooling specifically for oil field work, please share them.

The school is a waste of time and money. Employers will pay you to train you. There is no need to pay some cdl mill $5k to learn how to fill out a time sheet. If you are going to work in the oilfield take that 5 grand and buy a travel trailer instead.

Well, it would be about $1800, since its the local tech school, but I get your point.

I paid about $500 for my CDL and it's just as valid as anyone else's. I was hired without anyone ever asking to see my "diploma!" LOL. Diploma.

    Patrickm213,

Can you name any oilfield servicers that train new drivers (without CDLs)? Are they mostly water, sand, or...?

    Thanks!

All the major servicing companies train. Whether you will get hired without the cdl already is just up to chance and how many apps you fill out. Every credential you can get cuts your competition down.

Nabors will hire and train but you need to at least have your permit AFAIK. The CDL is easy to get though. If you aren't a moron who can't drive anyway.

That seems like a good price even if it was a "mill". If they have a curriculum that covers more then just what is needed to pass the test, it is all the more an investment in yourself.

Yes, there may be cheaper ways to get your license, but truck driving can turn really dangerous, really fast. Going to school, you may just end up walking away with one tidbit of information that someday saves your life or another.

I think I've pretty well made up my mind to go to school.
