I currently have two opportunities on the table but Im not sure what I should do.

    1st Opportunity:

I have a close friend that could get me into a company doing fracking. 70-90K is what I could make my first year but the problems is that i'll only be driving 30% of the time. My goal is to buy a truck and become an owner operator. Some people say that companies won't hire you if you're only driving 30% of the time. Plus, I've been told that the other 70% is manual labor. I know overtime is where you make your money but that is a SH!TLOAD of overtime. If thats what I have to do to buy a truck then thats what I'll do.

    2nd Opportunity:

One of my co-workers said he just came back from Texas. He said the only reason he came back is because is wife was having some medical problems. He gave me all of his old contact info to a company he used to haul sand for. The guy that does the hiring said that his lazy drivers make 65K a year. I'd like to make 80+ if possible. I don't care how long I have to run. I want a truck so Ill do what it takes to get one.

    The Question:

If you had to choose, what would you do? Haul sand or Frac?

Forgot to add that I'll be moving to Texas from California. Just me and my car.

It seems that you have answered your own question in a sense...If you want your own truck then drive and see what the sand hauling has to offer you.

I haul sand for gas wells in PA and I avg 90K+ a year as a company driver...

I stay out 21 days by choice and go home for 7

    90K+ and 12 weeks a year vacation..not bad

I have no desire to be a O/O

I dont "work" hard at all

If you want to make a career out of driving, and not necessarily in any one industry sector, drive a sand can for awhile and stash the money away for your own truck.

If you want to make a career in the oil/gas industry, go with a frac crew to start out, work that to the top, then move on to another facet of the business.

Now, as far as working the frac crew goes, if you're buying your own truck anyway, why does it matter that few other driving jobs will consider hiring you if you only drive 30% of the time?

Thanks for your replies. I have a road test next week in Odessa for a sand hauling company. I appreciate the feedback.
