Make sure you have a very knowledgeable cat mechanic that can look over, or help you with that motor, if that is still the same motor in that truck. That one can send you to the poor house fast if you don't know much about engines.

The first 3 digits are country and manufacturer identifiers.

Digits 4 through 8 are the vehicle attributes...things like body style, engine, etc...and are manufacturer specific.

Digit 9 is a check digit...not much meaning.

    10 is the model year.

    11 is the plant code.

    12-17 is a sequential number.

Any manufacturer should be able to look up the original specs based upon the VIN, as it is a unique number assigned to that individual vehicle. I know Mack only needs the last 6 of my VIN to look up any part or piece I need if I'm looking for a direct replacement. Seeing as how jeffw claims in his sig line to be a "Peterbilt Parts Wizard", I would assume he works at a Peterbilt dealer in the parts department where he has access to the computer system which has all of the information he posted.
