I have a 06 c-15 accert cat 912000miles on but only 100000 with cats "platinum" rebuild. When it's sat for 8hr or more fire it up it breaks up & billows of smoke until it's temp reaches 165. After that it pulls very sluggish & can't stand even the mildest of grades even empty! Cat acknowledges 120hp loss but can't figure out why. It doesn't throw codes & has been dynoed but they won't do anything unless either comp or dyno show problem! Any ideas or similar problems out there?

Smoke at startup color, smell? First thing comes to mind is leaking injector.

that just tells me how worthless the mechanics there are, that they have to rely on a dyno and a computer to fix an engine. whatever happened to diagnosing a problem with process of elimination

I would get online to the CAT's webpage and find email addresses for customer relations and anyone else and stae your problem there and that the dealer is not helping you. Facebook and Twitter also.

I know this is different, but thought I would mention it. Once years ago I drove a convention KW, about a 72 or 73 model. It had a 350 Cummins. If it set overnight and the temp got down below 70, it would not start without using ether. Them after it started you would think I was burning pine knots in each stack, because black smoke would just pour out of stacks. Yet when it warmed up the smoke would stop and it ran very good.
I thought about getting the injectors checked out, yet it had plenty of power, so I just kept driving it. I feared if it got worked on it might cost me some power.
I agree with maggard359 , I believe you may some type of an injector problem or maybe a cam problem. And it seems those who checked it out know nothing about Cat engines. -
GFK I would find another shop asap. Is this a Cat shop or a dealer your using, something don't seem right for them to be clueless, where is home maybe someone has a suggestion for a good shop in your area.

The mechanics hands are tied by corporate policy. I doubt they want to tell the customer this. But if they don't follow protocol they can end up footing the bill. When I had my own shop I couldn't replace a sensor while the engine was under warranty, if the customer wanted it covered they had to take it to a dealer. The dealer had to pull all of the data from the ecm for the warranty report. THAT IS THE WAY IT IS. Not saying it is right or wrong.
