I have a series 60 detroit and the water pump is leaking from the back. It is not coming out of the weep hole. It will leak only at first start up and will only leak for about 2 or 3 min. then it will not leak all day until the next morning. Is it something that should be taking care of NOW? And does the whole pump need to be replaced?

you need to make sure that the leak is not coming from the vertical hose above the pump.been fooled myself a couple of times.if it ends up coming from the pump.do it when you have the chance.not when it lets loose and your at someone elses mercy on the road.good luck.

If you can confirm the source is actually the w/p then the leak is minor and not a big concern right now. It won't fix itself, you will have to eventually replace it, but if need a couple more runs or whatever you should be fine. Just keep an eye on it. Yes, replace the whole pump.

If the pump is leaking, I would replace it now and not chance possible engine damage. If the pump were to start leaking coolant inside the engine, it can, and almost will damage the engine bearings.

the back of the w/p is plastic & is sealed with a large rubber o ring & kept in place by a strong snap ring. can order part for about 6 buck's. rust forms between the pump & snap ring & can leak.

I have found that it is leaking out of the back of the pump! (for sure) I was thinking that it was some sort of o-ring that could be replaced but everyone I have talked to say that it does not come a part. With your guys help and some searching on the web for a few hours, there is a kit that I can buy for that pump. It comes with the backing plate and the o-ring and the new snap ring. Now lets hope it is not hard to change! Thanks again for the help!

It is hard to see the o ring until you get the snap ring out. you will need a good snap ring pliers, & some real sqeezing strength to get it out. I paid $2.32 for the kit 12 years ago. as for the other poster, mentioning, about it leaking coolant into the engine... can the outside leak transform into internal leak ? I never heard of a water pump leaking from the inside into the engine. how likely does this occur ? I waited 6 months before I fixed mine years ago. if I thought it could leak internal, I would not have wasted any time.
