Hey folks,
I've got trucking down pat, but I'm trying to give my little brother a break. He's had challenges in life, and now admits that not taking me up on free training and a free semi from me back in 2003 was a mistake. He has dings, make that big dents, on his license, so his only choice is to do his own thing. He currently just holds a class E license. I can reinstate my authority, but I'm pretty sure I want him to get his own for liability reasons, as well as that might jeopardize my Landstar contract.
In the beginning, until he can build up a decent stake, what does he need?
Authority, insurance (is 1 mil/100k the standard here like in trucking?), plate for 26,000 to avoid CDL (IRP?), IFTA?, KYU?,NYHUT?, basically everything a non-CDL holder needs to be legal. Looking to run an open deck trailer 20-40 foot and 2500-3500 truck. 3500 would be preferred if he can still avoid cdl. Home base is Central FL. Starting out, where did you get your loads from? IT, Getloaded, etc or are there hotshot specific boards? Do any of you run prepass?
Thanks.
Give me step by step to get started in hotshot trucking please.

Step one will be to try to get insured. If he has things on his license, that will be the biggest hurdle.
As far as hotshot goes, there are those in the oil field areas & then there are those running flat bed ltl stuff all over the country. Would look more into the oil field stuff. I tried the ltl thing back in 07 & it is pretty tough if you do not have established freight. -
Will a 26000 lb rig need IRP and IFTA? If the truck is say a 3500 but plated only for 26k, does that keep it from needing a CDL? He'll be pulling a flat like I said above. Not interested in the oil field.Ole Timer Thanks this. -
If he goes out of state he'll need IFTA there's people that say you don't but you do!! I'm goin through alof thuis now....
Ole Timer Thanks this. -
He don't need kyu nor nyhut for 26k truck .And also exempt from 2209 .if under 54k
Ole Timer Thanks this. -
