I had an '06 780 with a 500 ISX, wasn't bad, good fuel mileage but replaced things that I thought should have lasted a bit longer. Compressor after 200,000 miles, water pump, fuel transfer pump, EGR of course. When I ordered this '12 780 I asked the boys who wrench on'em what to get and they flatly told me to stay away from the Cummins at this point. Lots of problems and Cummins are getting really nasty when it comes to warranty. So I got the D13 500 HP 1750 torque with an 18 speed. Only got 60,000 miles on it but I'll tell you what, this thing is like driving your pickup truck. It's so quiet, can't hear turbo or nothing. Takes a bit getting used to, so time will tell.
volvo d13 500HP or d16 500HP with I-Shift. Which one is better choice to buy?

Thanks d281833,
Your recent experience with D13 500 would be very helpful.
Almost I have a conclusion to go with D13 I-Shift XE13 pack, 780 with full extended warranty including EGR.
Regards,

I haven't bOught any of the extended warrantys yet but I will be before the 9 month period is up. The 455 HP rating cuts the warranty price almost in half. So far I haven't had any issues at all truck works great.

One of my friend who is team driving with his wife bought Platinum Engine Coverage Extended warranty from Volvo. This warranty features 3 Year / 800,000 kms - included and $500.00 deductible per visit after base warranty expires. As He is a team, this extended engine warranty looks pretty fine.
Another OOP whom I know paid almost $150,000.- for 2013 Volvo 780, D13, 500HP, XE13 with full extended (Bronze/Gold) warranty including Engine After-treatment Syatem, EA Harness/Sensor, Starter/Alternator and Air Conditioning, etc which is 4 year/800,000kms based.

Yeah I wasn't a big warranty guy but because no one knows a whole lot about these things my buddy ( shop foreman ) recommended engine warranty of course, and also wire harness and aftertreatment warranty as well. It's cheap and because of all the multiplexing of wires if there's a problem they just replace a section rather than trying pinpoint it. Anyone knows trying to diagnose a wiring issue can be extremely costly. And this aftertreatment thing is a whole new ballgame, doser problems, sensors, it's a crapshoot.

Thanks d281833.
I totally agree with your opinion regarding warranty.

Old thread, but did Volvo ever fix the D16? I know they had issues the first few years. But they still offer the motor to date, so thinking they may have worked a majority of the issues out by now?
davidtruckervan Thanks this. -
I don't think they did as of yet. Mines a 2012 d16 and just rolled over to 275000km and injectors and cups replaced with the latest ones. Coolant was pressuring up and blowing out the overflow.
2 dpf sensors telling the ECM that my filter was full but wasn't. Urea wire harness replaced
In the 18 months I would say approx 1-2 days a month on average of downtime due to engine issues.davidtruckervan and LBZ Thank this. -
