It does not mean you were able to deduct those miles, its just you did not get an audit from IRS. As w2 employee you can not deduct miles from home to your work site

Your right, as a company driver, but the op said he is a O/O, not a company driver

As to the audit? Well actually I was audited once while an O/O, end results where everything OK, as a O/O, you are allowed to deduct mileage to your personal vehicle for work related issues

As I interpret the text that was highlighted the mileage is deductable. It doesn't look like a 'gray' area to me.

No you can't. I tried this and when I was audited it was all rejected.

The reason given was because I am a driver, my trip to and from the truck is part of the work and the commute is consider going to the work, nothing else. I didn't get it until they said that the home is a home first, not an office first so the truck is at a fixed location that you normally go to.

The other part of this was the mileage I had for things like job interviews, picking up trucks, parts and etc. ... . This is deductible but keep logs of every place you go and why.

My home office is the only office for my company. My commute to work involves walking to the next room. I then leave the office and drive to my truck parked near my customer. I don't see this as being any different than Joe over at Bob's Plumbing using his personal vehical to go across town to unclog Mrs. Brown's toilet.

Not to detract from the tax question, but is there no place closer then 31 miles to park? Or are you required to with their trailer?

I "could" park in my driveway. But 61 miles at 20mpg versus 7mpg makes more sense to drive the pickup. Or can one claim all those miles as a loss somehow? And if so, which is better on my wallet at tax time?

@RustyBolt "Or can one claim all those miles as a loss somehow?" Your beginning to over think this, That's a good thing. Thinking is always good!

You're probably correct. Just trying not to give more to the IRS than I need to. Not that I want to give them anything.
