If it was just us WM account drivers whining, I doubt Mr. Low would be going through the considerable expense of having the trucks converted to duals. I would venture that the balance sheet has more to do with this decision than any whining.

Tires, while a considerable expense are nothing compared to the cost savings in fuel that is provided by side singles vs duals. Additionally a good part of the weight savings needed to scale loads in excess of 45,000 lbs by both lease and company tractors is provided by wide singles on both tractors and trailers. You can rest assured that if you're seeing duals on the Walmart fleet its because of whining on the part of drivers in that fleet. Y'all don't have to scale the loads the OTR divisions do.

Having continued to seek out information on the subject, this is the reasoning behind the change as was explained to me.

The wide singles on the tractors are part of an entire fuel saving package that includes the tires on the trailers, lighter trailers and the aerodynamic package on the trailers. This package is also most effective when the majority of the driving is at highway speeds. Those of us on the WM account do not benefit from the trailer portions of that fuel savings package as we tow heavier WM trailers with no aerodynamic additions. We also spend much less of our time driving on long, straight primary highways. (At least half of my miles are on secondary state roads or surface streets in the city. ) what the wide singles are giving the trucks is accelerated wearing of the tread surface under the driving conditions they are used for in this account. This is leading to much earlier replacement than trucks in the OTR fleets. This answer sounds reasonable to me and satisfies my curiosity on the subject. I am a data sponge who likes to know the whys of things. That brings me to subject not related to this topic directly, but to how it was discussed.

I've decided to make use of the ignore button in your case ironpony. While you may have a fair amount of useful information, the way in which you share it is unacceptable. You take every available opportunity to insult, demean and belittle the other posters here. If reading your unceasing abuse of others is the cost to access the information you possess, then it isn't worth the price of admission. To those that run this place I would ask how many folks you may have run off through your ill behavior? Enjoy being a big fish in a small pond, I ain't playing any more.

Typical... excuses to buy cheap tires. The fuel economy savings are accrued at all speeds, and don't depend on trailer aero packages or tare weight.

I'm on the company side, if they want to put duals on thier truck fine by me. I'm not going to make a big fuss over it. I'm too old to get into a tizzy over something as menial as the appearance of dual or super single tires on a truck that I'm issued to drive.

It has everything to do with how hard it is to get your fuel bonus. They're easily worth 0.5 mpg... that's what I gained on my last company truck.

I asked the shop guys up here in Olney about who exactly would be getting the duals conversion. They said that the plan was originally only to do the trucks assigned to Walmart's dedicated fleet, but they would also be doing a select few trucks from Division 111 who were consistently running out of the DC. I've done nothing but run this account since I went solo in January, so they said I would most likely get converted by summertime.

I'm not sure how they run things down in Shelbyville, but they might do something similar. The distinct impression I got from that conversation is that the conversion is only for Walmart trucks. It is not a company-wide issue.

    Chucktshoes Thanks this.

Once I was able to talk to the office folks who had actual information, I got told pretty much the same thing. I probably could have made that clearer in my last post. I think I was probably a bit more focused on the other issue.

Speaking of Olney, I was up there last night.
