Ok, I was trying to find the thread where some newbie had said he spoke with a "driver", and that "driver" told him "school experience counts for 6 months of driving"....
this is what I had told him, "NO...."some companies", may consider the schooling as no more than 1 month, as when you add up ALL your road time, believe me, you ain't even got THAT MUCH time behind the wheel....(here is the thread...http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...w-drivers/135052-how-can-i-get-back-road.html)
I didn't feel right giving that answer, so I needed to verify myself on that, as I DO NOT want to give out mis-information.
What I will usually do is if a question comes up here I cannot answer, or I am unsure of, I will jot it down and ask my supervisor. Unfortunately though, I forget to take my notes with me to school or I leave them in the car, and I forget them till a later time...
So that's just what I did today, I asked about "school driving experience" is equal to how many months of driving......
My supervisor said,........NONE of it counts, as the student was being "supervised while driving".....the "experience" would have been when the driver is all alone in the truck with NO ONE telling him / her to "shift, slow down, speed up, take your turn wide", etc,etc..
now however, one can be told that ANY amount of time IN SCHOOL may get you a job if you only have (say) 3 to 6 months of actual driving experience and you are applying for that job. they will ACCEPT the school's over all time as training time, put towards the few months of actual by yourself driving.......
so for instance (say) a person got his CDL all by himself...(no schooling), but applies for a job that requires at least 6 months experience....(with schooling), he is screwed, as he has no school certificate to back up his training.
now take the guy that went to school and has a certificate, and applies for that job.....he would be hired first, as he has proven training....and the six months he did, (after he graduated) BEING ON HIS OWN ON THE ROAD, will get him that job under a 1 year experience level......
so this is just about the only way school time gets you a job, not because school time "gives" you experience, but because you went to school to begin with...
IF ANY SCHOOL RECRUITER TELLS YOU WANNABE'S THAT THEIR TIME IN SCHOOL EARNS YOU 3 TO 6 MONTHS OF ACTUAL DRIVING EXPERIENCE, COME BACK HERE, PRINT THIS UP, AND SHOVE IT IN HIS FACE....THEY ARE LYING TO YOU.......
there is NO WAY that driving all of 1 hour each day, 5 days a week, for say 10 weeks, will ever add up to 6 months of time behind ANY WHEEL.....
here is a very simplistic formula....
professional driver, drives 40 hours per week, in one month that is 160 hours, times 6 months, that is 960 hours..
student driver....
1 hour each day, times 5 is 5 hours per week.....times 10 weeks is....50 hours
so please explain to me how 50 hours equals 960 hours...???
it doesn't does it...??
SO It's ALL BS when a school recruiter tells you your time is equal to 6 months of actual ALL BY YOURSELF driving time.....
I personally felt I HAD a responsibility TO MAKE a correction to my response and to set the record straight... I just wished I had done it quicker....thank you.
School "experience" DOES NOT count

I was also surprised to find how small of a portion the driving time was in a 160 hour class.

I have been doing a LOT of looking around at companies lately. There are companies that do not hire new drivers that require at least a certain amount of experience, then companies that hire new drivers OR at least a certain amount of experience. To me that means if I did not just pop out of a driving school I need X amount of driving experience with another company.

this is why i had to post this and make corrections so that if any wannabe or newbie is cajoled into thinking IT DOES apply as driving experience, the school recruiter is LYING TO YOU.....
never forget, nearly ANY recruiter, whether they be school or company recruiters, are paid (on average) a commission for every warm body they sign up...from that point, they could care less about you or your futures.....
because the old and i mean VERY OLD stand by response from a recruiter will be, "oh geez, they must have recently changed their policies, as just last week no one had any problems"......
i have been on these boards for quite some time now and i have spoken about how MY school refuses students that have criminal records, bad driving records as to not give false pretenses to any future they would have in trucking.
but other schools...?? well sadly, the horror stories are in droves here on this site......
my school as an example, does NOT HAVE recruiters....the owner does the enrollment, and if he ain't doing it, the secretary is, and they do not just sign up anyone. -
Perhaps the confusion comes from the following wording.....
Example---
Driver Qualifications:
1 year OTR experience OR 6 months OTR experience AND a certificate from a certified truck driving school. -
i do believe this is correct.....
but given a recruiters sales pitch, one is made to believe schooling counts as experience.
