How many problems can I have and still pass the DOT physical?

How many things can I have wrong with me and still pass the DOT physical? I am type 2 diabetic but not insulin dependent and my blood sugar levels are good, being controlled with diet and a pill (metformin) twice a day. I have high blood pressure, also controlled with meds. And I have sleep Apnea but use a CPAP machine and an oxygen generator. The good news is that I'll pass a drug test. Is there a point at which they just disqualify you, or can I still get my med card if the conditions are controlled? Thanks, all help is appreciated.

You will end up getting a 1 year DOT card, rather than a 2 year card. You should have a doctor's note stating that your BP and diabetes and your sleeping disorder, are under control, should your employer require proof of your condition.

After that, you're good to go.

Someone else should confirm what I have just said.

I don't see any problems. I would get a letter from my personal doctor stating everything is under control. Get a compliance letter from the RT. Blood pressure tests under 140/90 and you are good to go. Like Gizmo said, it'll most likely be a 1 year card. Good luck!

I'm curious though. How's your thyroid? I have what you have and after reseaching for a year I found sleep apnea contributes to the package deal of diabetes, BP and hypothyroidism.

Don't get too excited just yet......one of those conditions, no problem, but 3 conditions ? There are tons of applicants with NO medical conditions, right ? Just start the process and see what happens.

    CondoCruiser,

Thyroid is good, all my issues are self-inflicted. Too many years of eating good and not exercising. Trying to correct it but it takes time. Feb 1st will be one year without touching a cigarette and down 21lbs. I am going to take some time and lose more weight. Would like to start training at Fox Valley Tech this summer but don't want to waste my time if there is no chance of passing the DOT. So, thanks for the advice.

Are you speaking of passing the test or getting hired?

dot exams are about 80 dollars spend the money then you'll know if you qualify for a card. thats easiest and most accurate way to find out. I'd say if everything is controlled and DOCUMENTED then you'll pass

Getting into a truck can make your medical conditions worse. It takes extra effort to keep those in check and even more to get to a point to reverse them if you are driving truck.

You may find that yes you can pass the physical but there will be companies that will not hire you and some that will.
