I drove an automatic for eight months right out of trucking school (dumb idea). Now I want to work for someone else who has a manual transmission. Are there any companies that will work with me (refresher course or extended orientation) without me having to pay for my own refresher course because I'm broke?

You will be really lucky to find one that will do that. Did you not learn how to drive a manual shift in school? If you did do you think you can do well enough to pass a road test ? If not there may be away you can return to the school you went to and get them to give a chance to refresh yourself on a manual for a small fee, or even for free. Be worth a phone call to see.

Why don't you just go with a company that has all autos? Reminds me of a couple threads where new:biggrin_25515:bies just wanted to drive automatics from the get go thus starting the manual vs automatic wars here on TTR.

That might be a good idea. Are more and more companies making their fleet automatics?

He really needs to get back into a manual, and get proficient again..the main reason for that being, he won't have these problems anymore...we all get rusty after some time off, but as soon as we get with it again it comes right back...kind of like learning to ride a bike if you will. He never knows when he will break down with an auto, and the rental they bring him is a manual...get the picture...OP get back in a manual and cover your self in the future.....

Stay away from the mega-carriers. Find a good smaller company and they will either have you team or put you with a trainer for just a couple weeks instead of an expensive refresher course. If you go with a mega-carrier they are going to pay you trainee's pay and charge you for a refresher course.
