Is self-employment considered a work history?

I am a self-employed photographer and am thinking about jumping into trucking. I've been self-employed for the past 7 years but prior to that I have held various jobs to pay the bills.

I am 52 years old and have a Bachelor's Degree in public policy. I have had driving jobs in the past but no semi trucks. The largest trucks I drove were the large U-haul trucks. I drove for an art dealer around the Midwest back in the 80s.

I have a clean MVR and no criminal background. I'm a non-smoker and don't use drugs.

Would it be worth it for me to pay to go to a truck driving school? I've been reading that companies are looking for verifiable work history. I am wondering if my work history would disqualify me?

Did you file taxes? If not it won't count with most companies. Some of the starter companies might let you get by with saying you were unemployed. You'll have to call around and ask.

7 years? Any carrier will want to see some proof of self-employment that will cover the entire period. Tax filings, letters from clients and business associates, web site, invoicing, etc. Mostly, they want to know you we're not working for a Carrier XYZ a few years ago and was involved in a major at-fault accident, fired then went off the radar ... or were perhaps not at home "on the disability"

Hey there. I had similar issues myself with work history. It seems like every company has slightly different policies when it comes to this. But most will accept 1099's, tax returns and/or notarized reference letters (from former clients, vendors, etc.) as verification. I would strongly recommend contacting recruiters from companies you plan to apply to after school and finding out what their specific requirements are. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I have filed taxes every year and have a website etc...I have even been mentioned in an article in the digital photography magazine a few years ago.

Remember that any business insurance policies you had in your name will suffice as proof.

You'll be fine, but I'd recommend that you go to an outside trucking school before you sign on. All you'll have to do is show them your tax returns for the past three years and you'll be in fine shape.

Thanks Hooda. That was the plan. I'm thinking of Trainco. Has anyone had experience with them?
