Hello, I got my CDL in 2007 and signed onto one of the big flatbed companies and finished their onsite training and 2 months OTR with a trainer. Unfortunately, I had some personal issues with family and had to quit just before getting my own truck. Then I made a huge mistake and got a DWI in my personal vehicle later the same year, which was dismissed, but got a chemical refusal and lost my CDL for 1 year, regular license for 6 months.

Now, 6 years later, I am attempting to get back into trucking, and would like some opinions on what to do and what companies to consider; if any is possible. Driving record has the DWI or chemical refusal in 2007, nothing else. No criminal record. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Out of a big truck for 6 years you will be starting from scratch with most carriers. As for the charges be truthful to recruiters and see what they say , DWI dismissed or not is a problem with a lot of places.

If it got dissmissed get a lawyer and get it sponged out of the system. It may take up to a year, call a traffic lawyer or criminal and get more information about it.

what state are you in? if you refused- didnt they take a blood draw? what did you do after the year suspension? (weren't you reissued your CDL or did you downgrade to a "C") not trying to be nosey, but you arent giving enough information.

if you DON'T have a CDL anymore, you are basically starting over, and with the time (6 years ago) that has passed, you'll be fine..... but if i were in your shoes i wouldnt lie to potential employers/recruiters, i would tell the entire truth.

I still have my CDL, and looking for potential companies to get started back in the industry with my background. Full OTR. I trained in flatbed for the short time starting out, so that is where I would like to go back to. I'm in the Boston area.

You're gonna be fine............... you more than likely will have to go through a refresher course because you've been out of a truck for so long (for insurance purposes- im not saying you dont know how to drive anymore)

i would call a few places and ask what their hiring policy is regarding "a 6 year old DWI" (i know yours was "dismissed" but the refusal makes it a grey area)....

I think IMO you're going to find that only a "certain level" of job is available to you now..... and after your DWI turns 10 years old: you'll notice "better" jobs will be available to you.

Good Luck, Hope you learned something through all of this. (I know I did)

Contact Paschall Truck Lines & maybe they will let you go through their refresher course. You can apply online. Otherwise, you may have to start over with a full CDL school. CRST has flatbed & their qualifications say no DUI within 5 years. Again, apply online and see what happens. Do what you must, to get back on the road.

Swift goes back 5 years & has a flatbed division.
