We're not force dispatched at Swift but its frowned upon, I've turned down a few loads, usually ones that are really small, like under 100 miles which is fine but the window on it is too large. I've rejected one for too heavy, I cant scale my Prostar as well as my old Volvo, its a heavy #######. Usually if I turn a load down they have another one behind it, depends on where you are in the country and who's working at the terminal thats planning for that region.

Generally the easiest way to get a load off your truck you dont want is to NOT answer the qualcomm, I've done that 2-3 times, after a while they may take it off you, but not always and you end up having to accept it anyways. Always remember you work for the company and they put that load on you, if you dont answer that message and miss your pickup window its YOUR fault.

But for the most part you're going to just turn loads down that would violate your hours of service. But I've been finding if you run, get your loads picked and dropped when you're supposed to, they'll try to help you out. Good planners and dispatchers remember good drivers, and will try to help you out when they can. I got a nice load this weekend where they were able to change the pickup time so I wouldnt violate my 10.

I worked for CRST, and their forced dispatch policy is "no forced dispatch to NYC". lol..and i never even got dispatchd to NYC in the time i worked there, at all. (so all my loads were forced). One day, I had my fifth wheel break in the middle of the night. Infact, it was my very first load with the company. I dropped the first load at the consignee, tried to hook to an empty, and after attempting to hook it for about 20 minuts (i have NEVER hada problem hooking before), i pulled out from under it, and pulled the handle again even though i knew the jaws were open...handle came off in my hand. Heh. The roll pin that holds it in broke.. This happened at Con Way in Des Moines, IA.

anyway, back to my point. it was the middle of the night. night dispatch took the load off me and maintenance told me to go to the freightliner dealer in des moines. About half an hour later, i get there, and im informed that i'll be waiting there for over 24 hours before they can even look at it. Maintenance approves us to bobtail all the way to Cedar Rapids and claims they can get us on the road faster than freightliner.

First of all, after the day shift came in, the dispatcher was freaking out asking me why i was in cedar rapids and who told me to go there. LOL. no big deal though, he was just confused. I was waiting all day for maintenance to get to us. We got a dispatch on the qualcomm. I tried to refuse the load because there was no way we could pick it up or deliver it on time at all. A few messages were sent, leading up to "we dont care, just get it there when the truck is fixed". truck was fixed at midnight. LOL. load was very late. :)

you would have thought they had another driver to pull that load. Or maybe they just wanted to make sure they could get me some miles, this was back when i had a dispatcher that ran me HARD. (i wouldnt have quit if i was on his fleet when i quit)

Guess I'm naïve, but why would anyone NOT want to work? As they say, when your wheels ain't turnin', you ain't earnin'. Unless you're in a hurry to hit the bunk, or meet Sherry the waitress, why not just stay active and gainfully employed? Seems to me that if you gain a reputation in dispatch for WANTING to work, then they will be more likely to pass things along to you and not to your buddy who rejects loads.

Sometimes its a bigger hassle than the loads actually worth. I took a load for 80 miles loaded, 10 empty, it paid 43 cents a mile loaded since it was short, and a $25 bonus for shorthaul. Not too bad for what should have been a short load, needless to say due to having no directions to the consignee and taking forever to load, and then arriving at the consignee ON TIME according to the info on my qualcomm, and finding out instead that they dont accept people past a certain time, I lost more money than I had made if I would have just rejected it and waited for another. I burned up 6 hours on a 2-3 hour load, and then sat the whole next day.

You can get a feel for whats in the area after you've been driving for a while, that load went in to the heart of the new york city metro area, I should have known better!

is that like forced nursing?? if you refuse to change a bedpan it is likely that you wouldnt be asked for additional employement???

is forced dispatch fake mode of operation in the trucking industry or jsut part of service contract?

What can I do if I reject a load and boss threatens me with reporting me to dot. I left that company Cuz I was trying to fuel for a day prior to leaving and couldn't do that for some reason the day I had to leave wasn't able to fuel. Then he wanted me to leave later but I wasn't going to have enough time. I refuse to run illegal when there's no need for it. If he having problems with diesel what am I to expect down the road. Any suggestions on how to protect myself from these money hungry bullies

The main reason someone should turn down a load has to do with safety and hours of service. I have turned down loads when I did not have the hours to get there. Sometimes this slips past the dispatcher. I have no problems driving in weather but some people do. If you don't feel safe turn the load down. NYC is difficult because they have strange signs for bridge height. People turn loads down there often. Other people don't like taking a load of steak into downtown Detroit. They are fearful of getting shot.

There are many reasons to turn down loads.

Transport America sometimes has short hauls going into Louisville. I know folks turn down a 128 mile run because they don't think it is worth it. However, TA has a drop lot there and you run in there and get a good load coming out. So make sure you know what your next load is before you turn one down.

Well...It goes like this, they send you a quallcom message (with 20 min to 60 min to spare on 1000 mile run) Then you have to run on your governor and pee in a Gatorade bottle to make the deadline. If you Don't take it (they starve you out) a Few "Grunt Runs follow...and you get put on their ...t List.
