Greetings,long time lurker "first" time poster.I felt there weren't enough step by step storys here for new comers so I will be posting my story .
A little about my self ,I'm in my mid-late 20's on the east coast,Have only had two other jobs which were mcdonalds and a data entry office job .I find myself getting older with no real income and I realize by sacrificing my social life and going OTR trucking for a couple of years can bring me back into "the game of life".
My current plan is to get approved for the workforce investment act and go to a community college for my CDL-A then attend a major carrier who will send me with a trainer for a couple of weeks to get the ropes,after about 3-4 months if I'm not bringing home 3k/month I'll begin searching for either a higher paying account or switch to a local gig .
My end goal is to be able to have about 90k in savings after 4 years ,which shouldn't be too hard with no bills to pay.
==============================
1/1/14-7/1/14:I read many articles and forums about the trucking lifestyle as well as contacting local trucking schools about the cost of training .All schools seemed to be in the 4k+ range due to government grants .
7/14/14:I contacted my local employment center and was told to register and submit a resume to their online site ,afterwards to come to their office to get a calender to find the WIA orientation date and to attend 3 workshops
7/18/14:I picked up the calendar,orientation is on the 21ist for WIA
This is my story *Doink Doink* Pt1 ( WIA GRANT->Trucking school->Job )

I like your plans.Iowa Central out of Fort Dodge is a real good school and they'll pay for your transportation to the school.
-
7/22/14 :I was told at the meeting I would need to go to One of four workshops related to the field of training I want ,sadly they only hold one each week and transportation was last week which means I have about a 3 week wait . I would also need to attend a resume making workshop held every Wednesday and list 10 jobs I tried to get (which can be before I attended this meeting).
Redbeard93 Thanks this. -
good luck i am trying for WIA in illinois but since i am only 21 they wanted a pre-hire letter hope we both have a good thing with the grant.

I don't get it. Is the "questions from new drivers" the only section these guys see? If a guy can't even post a topic in the correct section I'm not so sure that they should be in control of a commercial vehicle.
randal02lee Thanks this. -
8/6/2014ecided to get the resume workshop out of the way ,was about a hour long and the guy just went over the obvious basics.

8/14/14: I attended the career work shop: logistics /warehouse / manufacturing ,there was about 17 people of which only one was female and I believe she was just there satisfy some unemployment requirement ,the rest of us were there for our CDL-A.
The first 30 min were pretty much the lady trying to tell us NOT to get into trucking and try to become a manager at a warehouse,she also mentioned that mexicans who can't speak a word of english are making $70,000 at nearby warehouses which made me feel werid ...
The last half were recruiters for two trucking schools and they mentioned the new sleep apena/BMI requirement coming out in march and how the widening of the panama canal is going to increase trucking jobs .Pretty much it was just a less informative version of this site in person form.
So now I'm waiting back for a call to finalize my application for WIA funds . -
8/18/14:So I went two meetings to actually register for wia due to some miss understandings ,was just filling out paper work.They told my I had to take a test for math and reading .
8/19/14: I took the test.it was 3 subjects (math,reading and graph reading),I needed to pass 3 levels in math and 4 levels in the rest. Each level is 5 questions and you can't get more than one wrong .I passed then was taken to a "customer service rep" . They;re now taking me through the process of getting approved for the school.
Due to the mix up I'm assigned to the "adult funding stream" which is dried up until October ,will see what happens. -
