Just gonna go ahead and start this thread now, pretty excited to get going! Trucking is all I've ever wanted to do so let's hope I'm not horrible at it. As the title says I'm leaving Monday morning with my trainer with the load going to western mills New York for Ashley furniture. Oh yeah the company is garner transportation out of findlay ohio. Pretty stoked to get going. Spoke with the trainer today, seems like a decent guy asked what I ate he could get some extra food for me. Trucks an automatic though so that should be different! Believe he said its a '14 volvo 670. Packing light just a duffel with a weeks clothing, small bag for shower and bathroom stuff and sleeping bag and pillow and something for the dirty cloths. Seems like a decent place to get into the industry..generally home every weekend and only runs 7 or 8 states. Gotta say I love this site...gave me great insight on what to expect and how to pack. Training s a 3 week minimum, longer if you need it. Gonna learn all I can..besides that's what this is for because I'll admit I don't know anything about the industry. I'm open to any advice or suggestions you all have so feel free to chime in!
leaving with my trainer on monday

Just from reading your post sounds like you made a great choice in a company.Good luck during your training and make it a fun exp while you learn. Please keep us updated.

If your trainer ask you what you like to eat, that is a good sign he is experienced and you have a good trainer. Good start. Just do what it takes to get along with him. Running team with someone, is kind of like being married to them.
If you hit a rough patch with him, just keep in mind it is only going to be for three weeks and you get to go solo!

OPUS 7 Thanks this. -
Yeah I was bit surprised when he asked what I liked to eat. He was actually really helpful and gave recommendations on what else I should bring. Said he was making some extra room for me to bring some dry snacks and drinks. Only thing I really sucked at in school was the log class. Granted it only lasted a day so it was either catch on or good luck. Have to get that down but if you put your mind to it, ask questions, and actually try ill catch on. At least get the basics down before the winter months get here.

Your trainer will be an expert at logging team logs, which is a different animal. No worries there.

The first two weeks I'm on the Qualcomm then the last week I also have to do a weeks worth of paper logs to turn in to the company for review. Just to make sure you can use em if the electronics go out. Does that tend to happen from time to time?

Good to hear a positive attitude. There will be times when you will wonder if you made the right decision but just take a deep breath, do whatever you need to to relax and find your "inner chi" or whatever. You will learn a lot by watching too. Watching bad drivers, watching good drivers, don't hesitate to ask questions. If you have family/wife/kids the transition will be harder but you'll get through it.
Tonythetruckerdude and OPUS 7 Thank this. -

So overall would you guys say it's hard learning to correctly do logs? In school they gave us these story problems where you had to read it and write out the paper log for the trip. Had a Heck of a time trying to understand that!

Im starting to realize no matter how fantastic a teammate is, with enough time you will hate their guts.
