Well Mercedes bought freightliner and freightliner owns detroit so you do the math. Look what mercedes did with Chrysler. they made a mess of everything, changed a bunch of established vehicle lines (sorry I am a jeep buff and they destroyed the jeep brand) and sold it off.

I have a 2005 Freighliner Columbia with MBE 4000 in it. THis truck has had nothing but problems. Head gasket was replaced at 200K, along with cylinder liners etc all under warranty. At 415K, just 15K out of warranty, the head gasket went out again, resulting in another engine rebuild at a cost of $7K.
I filed a lawsuit against Freightliner. If anyone has had similar problems and want to participate, please contact me. I may just make this a class action.
The head gasket issue is in addition to the exhaust leak that put the driver in a hospital, bursting high pressure fuel line, replacement of all kinds of sensors, EGR valve etc etc etc.Last edited by a moderator: Aug 7, 2021

Call Salem Leasing in Winston Salem, NC. They bought around 200 hundred of them, and had every problem you spoke of, and more. The EGR engines would smoke you out of the cab when idling, or backing up. Head gaskets every 200k or less, fuel lines constantly, water pumps, turbos, waiting a week for a fan belt. ect.
I drove one for three years, pre-egr engine. It ran good, had good power for what we did, but had two head gaskets and turbos before 300K.
If you want to smell exhausr, have an Mercedes EGR engine in a Sterling. Where the exhaust leaks is right at the air intake for the heat/ac. When stopped or backing up the cab will completely fill with fumes. I would turn off the heat or ac, then roll down the windows before I stopped moving if I was going to back into someplace. -
File a regular suit naming the dealer, the dealer owner, the salesman who sold it, Freightliner Corp, Daimler-Benz (or whatever they call it now), the prez of FL and MB and everybody else you can think of.
My son did that on a Pete he bought with a troublesome ISX and he got a settlement offer within 30 days... -

we have two '05 with these motors and they are a joke twice a year the idler pulley snaps off, fuel leaks, water pumps, decent power, but always needing something fixed

Ya'll ain't lying about the exhaust leaks those EGR MBEs have. Especially when you put the heat on. My company bought 3 06 FL Cambodias at about 600,000 miles each, one of which I spent about 2 months with, and within 3 months they were all in the shop for a rebuild. Mine would shut down if I didn't put 2 gallons of water in it everyday and its near worthless eurobrake would quite when ever I really needed it. And I hate the way the throttle responds with those motors. With every MBE I drove, The throttle seemed overly sensitive and was real easy to over-wind the motor when I downshifted. Every time I see that truck I thank God I don't drive it no more. The only thing I liked about them was they had a fairly wide powerband and you can lug them down to about 1100.

I have been an MBE4000 operator since 2006. The 410s are a joke but my current wide open 450 is one hell of a rig. I used to have a 565 ISX and I tel you this 450 MBE is one hell of a puller even with the regen system and a useless 10 speed. True these engines dont have the low end grunt that the bigger classic S60s, ISX, N14s do BUT I haul over 100,000lbs DAILY and get OUTSTANDING fuel mileage, yes any other engine will pull better but no other engine with match MPGs with the same load, hands down. These engine are very under appreciated.

I am driving a freightliner with the mercedes benz 4000...I cant seem to find what the operating range is for this engine, its a 2005, nice truck when not in the shop just had the egr replaced and its got its power back. Before it went to the shop it had no power at all, it seems now its got more power than ever. Just wondering were this engine shifts at, got eaton fuller ten speed. thanks
