I am in the process of my commercial drivers license. I am currently going through a financial hardship and I will be in the need of some assistance in paying for the required education. The program I chose to receive assistance from is the workforce investment act which will cover my entire school expenses. Unfortunately I have a criminal background which was obtained in my immature years. That is all behind me and I am in a different place in my life right now. Becoming a truck driver and obtaining my commercial drivers license will really give me a brand new start. In order for the workforce investment act to play for my school expenses I have to receive several Pre hire letters from trucking companies stating that upon receiving my commercial drivers license that they will consider me for hiring. They ask for this information to ensure they are not paying for this schooling and I still can't get a career job. I have friend lots of companies and got turned down. I'm hoping someone can help me and/or assist me in getting these pre hire letters or even just point me in the right direction to companies they will give me the letters.
thank you in advance
Help please!!

Chicago: add these and remember, most companies these days bend their own hiring rules, so apply anywhere you want and ignore what the websites have.
Comet Transportation - Harvey, IL
PI&I Motor Express - Masury, OHmcage Thanks this. -
Check out Craigslist too. Bunch of Chicago trucking companies on there and a few of them will hire you. Someone I know with speeding tickets got on with a company. He is teaming with some guy doing coast to coast runs.

Time matters for a lot of companies. What did you get convicted of, and how long ago?
Some crimes you can get sealed in Illinois. I think its 3 to 5 years after conviction. Also, if your in messed up Cook County, the sealing will take like a year plus, other wise 6 months. It comes down to where the crime is committed. That police agency (ex CPD) has to say its ok for a sealing to occur with the Illinois State Police saying ok too. But, Cook county courts are horrid with record retrieval. If you do get it sealed you can legally answer you have never been convicted of a crime. -
At this time, it is immaterial the reason for your jail time. What is important is to get those pre-hire letters. I would continue to send them, but more importantly, if you can, go in person to some local companies as well. Get to talk with the dispatcher, and explain to him, even if they really won;t hire you, at least say that they will, and thank him for helping. Sometimes walking in and showing your face really works. Heck, they may need a dockworker NOW, and there you are, with a new job, foot in the door, and your future awaits you.
Very best of luck to you, and your past is not really important here, at this time, so no need to tell us.
PS to the Central Transport, someone else mentioned. I tried applying to them as well, up here. I can tell you from that experience, the dispatcher was the one to see, then he takes you to the terminal manager. Now too, if my memory serves me, they pay on a 1099, at least I do know that the dockworkers DID back then. The drivers, I have spoken to, again back then, were paid on a 1099 as well. But that could have all changed by now, or stayed the same.
Central Transport goes through people like many other companies do, again, at least up here, they are ALWAYS advertising for help, so beware of that too.Last edited: Dec 20, 2014

CR England will likely give you a letter... but they'll also be a good "last resort" only to actually join.
