i'm not a law expert, so I may be reading too deep into something

as most of us know when you use the IL Tollway they have checkpoints every so often and charge you at said checkpoints. on top of that they also charge you to get off the road (which makes sense) but i'm asking because it seems like double taxation, which is illegal.

is it 100% ok because its a private company (technically?) or is it becasue Illionis is, well Illinois, so they are free to do whatever they want?

again, i'm not an expert on law and all that so I might be reading too deep into something?

It is a toll road like any other toll road. They set the fares, the toll booths whatever they want. It is what it is!

You are charged $x/mile to use the road. Rather than receiving a time-stamped ticked with your entry point and paying once when you exit, they decided to break it up into sections, with toll booths every so often. The first exit after a toll booth is usually free to get off, because you just paid...but the closer you get to the NEXT toll booth, the more expensive your exit will be. Same way in reverse for the entrances...the entrance right before a toll booth is free because you are about to pay, and the ones right after the toll booth are the most expensive to get on because you haven't paid yet. Bottom line, they think you've got money and they want it. I haven't given money to the Illinois Tollway in probably 15 years. Plan my trips along untolled roads, usually avoid traffic, and sometimes even cut down on miles driven. To work, though, you've got to incorporate the route around into your total trip...not say "oh crap...last exit before the tolls! I gotta go around these..."

As long as there are "free" roads that I can drive on, funded by my road use tax dollars, I refuse to pay extra to drive on their "special" roads. If they want to collect tolls to pay for that section of highway, we ought to receive fuel tax credit for the miles we were on the tolled road. THAT is the true "double taxation" that occurs on the toll roads.

That is virtually impossible when driving around the Chicago area all day.

Ok here's this one. I was on the Kansas toll road active duty in uniform driving a U.S. Navy semi and I told the toll collector we'll reduce what we give you for funding for my passing. He promptly told me I had two choices, 1 pay the toll, or 2 go to jail.

I've never paid an IL toll...They have no mechanism to enforce their tolls so I just roll under the electronic beam, did it for 4yrs, multiple times a week...

The price is going up again, like .40 a mile, because they can.
