I'm starting with a company soon and I'm trying to figure out their shift schedule. I would call and ask them about it but I don't want to seem apprehensive about this position or it's shift schedule. This a home daily, local company and I'll be working 12 hour night shifts. I get every 3rd weekend off and 2 days off in the middle of the week for the other 2 weeks. This is why it confuses me. Has anyone here done this kind of shift, or can use their intelligence and math skills to figure out what days I'd be working, and what days I would actually get off? This company is under agriculture so they only follow the 12 hour work day and they don't travel outside of a 100 mile radius, so hours of service doesn't really apply here except for the 60/70 hour rule.

It's hard to say actually. Something you maybe should have been a little more in depth about during the hire process. I have seen companies that give you time off on the fly...meaning you don't have set days to be off in advance..you may not know you're off till the evening before you're off. Not saying that's your case but I have seen it with ag haulers. It can vary with whatever is going on at the time..how heavy the truck and product demand is.

So if ya started tomorrow you'd have maybe Thursday -Friday off, for two weeks. Then the third weekend off? What about the fourth week? I'd call and clear up the confusion..

If I had Thursday/Friday off for 2 weeks and then Saturday/Sunday the third week, and then Thursday/Friday off the 4th week, then I would either only work 3 days on my 4th week or have to go 10 days until my next 2 days off, which isn't legal.

You'll have to play it by ear, but since it's a night shift make sure you get your sleep, shades pulled down and I like to have a fan blowing on my face but make sure you get your sleep , during the day!!!! before you get on shift, do you like coffee? , coffee has helped me on the 3rd shift runs, you might get lucky and get a 2nd it's alot easier than the 3rd watch..... Don't get excited, let the truck do all the work your job is to pay attention to the work the truck is doing "stay awake" when you are on duty

There's no way of knowing without talking with them. I will give you some advice though. If you expect to be going on night shift and haven't previously worked a shift like that...a few days before you start working...go ahead and proactively put yourself on that schedule prior to your first day of work. It will make the transition less painful.

My $.02...night shift ******* sucks. I like the work and people, but every night shift is painful for me. As in it reminds me of being sleep deprived, wet, and hungry back in survival school. It's tenporary for me (hopefully just another month). Some people do just fine working nights though.

You already got the job didn't you? If so then don't be afraid to ask. Better to know now than to try to figure it out later. Benefits all parties involved. Congrats and good luck.

Worst case scenario, if I hate it I'll put in a few months and look elsewhere. That's the beauty of the trucking industry...anyone will hire you lol. Of course I want to refrain from switching companies but the option is always open.
