I'm looking into a couple different companies that offer CDL training in exchange for a years worth of employment. I think this is an almost perfect arrangement because I can get my CDL while also getting a years worth of experience. After one year I would either stay if the money was good or move into something more local that requires a CDL, like working for the power company. The only downside is that the schooling and training is around 11 weeks, which is a long time to not see my wife.
My question is, would this be an ideal way to get a CDL license and experience? The company says the typical salary for a student driver is 40k first year, which isn't bad as long as that is actually typical and not the top 10%.
Thanks

Sometime soon a member of the forum who goes by Chinatown will give you all kinds of information. The best way I can describe it is " His cup of knowledge runneth over".
rda2580, ethos and nshore harleyguy Thank this. -
I would recommend Schneider Bulk. Start tanker and stay there. But like Powerstoke said Chinatown will be along soon enough.

Luckily my wife is ok with the 11 weeks... Its just like boot camp all over... And with so many bad trainer horror stories I'm preparing myself for it bein just as bad or worse. I just hate how people say stuff to get you in the door then expect you to stay when its nothing as advertised. I think if they were more transparent the turnover rate wouldn't be so high

For me personally, going to a private school for four weeks near home is more important than being away for eleven weeks at a company school or a community college. I can't afford to pay out of pocket right now but I can get a loan and have applied for a WIA grant to help pay for school. After figuring all that out I still have to find a company that is okay with a couple of dings on my DMV record, has a reasonable pet policy, and will not screw me over.
Between all the threads on this website talking about all the different companies and job options, then doing some google searches on schools and filtering out all the bs so you know what to avoid, you should have a good idea on which school and company is the best to meet your goals.
